This might be common knowledge to LJN collectors, but I haven't heard this before.... DH Smith said the Cowboy Bob Orton LJN figure was originally intended to be a "Cowboy Bret Hart" figure until Hart didn't want to do the Cowboy gimmick. TIs that true?

Yes if I remember right Bret was pitched the cowboy idea in all white riding to the ring on a white horse I know he was pitched the gimmick and refused, but the way Smth explained it, he seemed to be implying the LJN Orton figure is molded after Bret Hart. Didn't know if that was true.

Bret Hart WAS Cowboy Bret Hart prior to the WWF. I'm not sure if it's on Youtube or not, but his appearances in World of Sport, he was billed as "Cowboy Bret Hart". My knowledge of Stampede Wrestling is unfortunately not as much as I would wish it to be, but I believe he was also Cowboy Bret Hart there.
He was supposed to come into the WWF as Cowboy Bret Hart, a solo wrestler, in 1984. It'd make sense that LJN would've made the mold of him then, especially with that type of garb. the fringe vest and gear matches what he was wearing at least in the stuff I've seen from World of Sport. The story isn't outrageous, but it's one of those things that unless Bret goes into depth about it (which I doubt he remembers all the details, with his stroke and all), it'll probably never be known for sure.

Thanks, buddy! I've see some Bret in Stampede matches, but like you, nowhere near as much as I'd like to see. Never saw him as a cowboy though. I need to check him out in World of Sport now!

He wrestled as Cowboy Bret Hart in Maple Leaf Gardens....WWF run show, with the undercard locals and indie guys back in 84. He had a black cowboy hat and a black vest. I sawnhim against JJ Dillon...and maybe Rene Goulet? I also recall him being billed as Buddy Bret Hart.
I dont believe the line about the LJN being possibly his mold....he was so far down the pecking order, they probably didnt have a thought to make him yet. When he got over in the Hart Foundation, it made sense to make a figure. I think Orton must have been figured into one of the earliest line since he was an upper mid card guy.

I have never been a huge Bret Hart fan HOWEVER I find him and his family history very interesting. I highly recommend Bret Hart's book to any wrestling fan. The Cowboy gimmick is discussed in detail but there is no mention of the figure. For those interested in this subject more, there is a History of Stampede Wrestling book that is very informative as well.

The strangest thing to me is that it took so long for Bob Orton to get a figure. He was much bigger a prescence from 1984-1986. Depending on when the toy came out Orton was way down on the card or maybe even gone. It also surprises me the pink Hart Foundation outfit came out so quickly. The pictures on the card backs were black top/black pants/red stripe and up to late 1986 I think they were still in the black on black with stripe outfit.

I watched a few Stampede matches on YouTube. Now I can kinda see a resemblance between the Orton LJN and Bret's cowboy gimmick days. IMO most of the LJNs had a very spot on face for the era they were made in. Orton didn't look too much like him, I'm not saying he favors Bret either though. Guess its one of those questions you'd have to ask The Hitman or an LJN guy.

I have also heard this story a couple years ago. I never thought the figure looked like orton.

I've heard this too. I think from a Bret book, dvd, or something. Always found it funny that the Orton LJN has long curly hair.

Come on, it's not like Orton had short, straight hair:
