Wednesday 21st August, 2002; TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling; TNA Championship: Gauntlet for the Gold!!
TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling open…
Two weeks ago Jeremy Borash announced that on Wednesday 21st August, 2002 TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling will crown the first TNA Champion when everyone on the TNA roster will compete in a Gauntlet for the Gold match. Last week Monty Brown and Christopher Daniels made their debuts both men vowed to become the first TNA Champion while Monty promised by the end of the night that everyone would be talking about Monty Brown. Abyss attacked again. AJ Styles, Low Ki, Steve Corino, Jerry Lynn and Chris Harris all scored victories. James Storm wants to win the TNA Title in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. Jeff Jarrett beat Ron Killings in the Main Event after Elix Skipper debuted and attacked Killings with a steel chair which allowed Jarrett to beat Killings once again with his Stroke. Elix Skipper was wearing a New England Patriot’s jersey with Monty on the back. Elix Skipper it seemed was sent by Monty Brown to cost Ron Killings his match and by the end of the night it was Monty Brown everyone was talking about.
Jeremy Borash the host of TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling welcomed everyone to the fifth TNA Pay per View. Borash hyped tonight’s Main Event between two of the biggest names on the TNA Roster and two of the favorites to become the first TNA Champion. Borash also revealed that tonight Ricky Steamboat will be here and Steamboat has invited AJ Styles and Low Ki to meet him in the middle of the ring tonight.
Tonight’s Main Event; Jerry Lynn V Steve Corino!
Ron Killings was making his way down the ramp. Killings clearly not happy with last weeks event’s where Elix Skipper cost Killings his Main Event against Jeff Jarrett. Killings’ was not scheduled to be out here at this point. Killings rolled into the ring and demanded a microphone. Ron Killings told Elix Skipper and Monty Brown they have pissed off the wrong brother and Killings ordered Brown and Skipper to get out to the ring and face their consequences. No sign of either Elix Skipper or Monty Brown. Killings called Brown and Skipper cowards but promised he would get his hands on them. Killings’ wants to fight tonight, right now so Killings’ issued an open challenge to any man in the back. Alan Funk accepted Ron Killings challenge…
Match 1;
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
Ron Killings V Alan Funk
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
Ron Killings V Alan Funk
Ron Killings beat Alan Funk via pin fall after a sit out supflex. Killings’ was all over Funk and on a couple of occasions Killings came close to being disqualified.
Winner; Ron Killings
Jeremy Borash while Ron Killings was still in the ring came out to announce that Elix Skipper has signed a contract with TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling it was one of the terms of Monty Brown signing with TNA. Borash told Killings that next week Elix Skipper would explain why he cost Ron Killings his match last week but at Monty Brown’s request Ron Killings will be banned from the arena next week.
Mike Tenay and Don West spoke at ringside about Monty Brown’s demands. Monty Brown already thinks he’s a big shot but one day Ron Killings will get his hands on Monty Brown and Brown will have to prove himself in the middle of the ring. Tenay shifted attention to tonight’s Main Event between Jerry Lynn and Steve Corino and introduced interviews recorded by both men earlier in the week.
Steve Corino is still bitter about what he calls the lack of respect shown to him by TNA Management. Corino is a former World Heavyweight Champion. Corino will go on to become the first TNA Champion and the back bone of the company but no one seems to believe in him so Corino will knock out Jerry Lynn like he knocked out Jimmy Yang and then maybe people will realize that Steve Corino is the best and knocking Jerry Lynn out will be just be a bonus because Steve Corino is not exaggerating when he says he hates Jerry Lynn.
Jerry Lynn thinks Steve Corino is a scumbag. Steve Corino believes he’s better than he actually is and believes that he is owed something when the truth is Steve Corino is good but hasn’t proven to be great yet. Lynn thinks Steve Corino to prove he is great has to become the first TNA Champion but that is not going to happen because Lynn himself will become the first TNA Champion because no one wants it more and Lynn too is looking to cement his legacy and nothing would make Lynn prouder than becoming the first TNA Champion.
Tonight’s Main Event; Jerry Lynn V Steve Corino!
Match 2;
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
Jimmy Yang V Joey Matthews
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
Jimmy Yang V Joey Matthews
Jimmy Yang had to be medically cleared to compete tonight after being knocked out last week by Steve Corino. Yang and Matthews are both still looking for their first victory in singles action.
Yang and Matthews touched fists before the match in a sign of respect…
Joey Matthews beat Jimmy Yang via pin fall after a jacknife roll up after Yang landed hard after missing a drop kick from the middle rope. Joey Matthews finally got his first victory at Jimmy Yang’s expense Yang could have done with a week away from the ring after being knocked out by Steve Corino last week.
Winner; Joey Matthews
Jimmy Yang was slow to his feet. Yang congratulated Matthews on his victory but Yang was clearly upset with another defeat.
Mike Tenay and Don West hyped that later tonight Ricky Steamboat has invited AJ Styles and Low Ki to the ring meaning for the first time since the first TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling Pay per View, AJ Styles and Low Ki would share a ring with one another but up next it was time for the in ring debut of ‘Fallen Angel’ Christopher Daniels who is standing by backstage with Jeremy Borash with pre match comments…
Christopher Daniels told Jeremy Borash that last week Daniels talked the talked but really everything Daniels said has been said before by someone else. Jeff Jarrett, Steve Corino, AJ Styles, Low Ki and others have claimed to be the best, have promised to become the first TNA Champion. What makes Christopher Daniels different to anyone else? Tonight Christopher Daniels will show everyone what makes him different and that is the gospel according to the Fallen Angel.
Match 3;
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
Norman Smiley V Christopher Daniels
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
Norman Smiley V Christopher Daniels
Christopher Daniels beat Norman Smiley via submission after making Smiley tap out in the middle of the ring to Daniels Koji Clutch. Daniels messed with the veteran Smiley throughout the match and a couple of times Daniels could have Smiley away and had Smiley set up for some of his favored moves including Angel Wings only for Daniels to pass up the opportunities.
Winner; Christopher Daniels
Christopher Daniels leaned into the camera after the match and told everyone watching that they just seen Christopher Daniels can walk the walk. Mike Tenay and Don West admitted that Christopher Daniels made a believer out of them tonight.
Tonight’s Main Event; Jerry Lynn V Steve Corino!
Mike Tenay at ringside shared a bit of history between Jerry Lynn and Steve Corino ahead of tonight’s Main Event. Lynn for many years was held back not given an opportunity because of his size but eventually Lynn overcame everything holding him back and became the World Heavyweight Champion only to lose the title a little over a month later to Steve Corino!
Up Next; Ricky Steamboat invites AJ Styles and Low Ki to join him in the middle of the ring!
Jeremy Borash standing in the middle of the ring introduced wrestling legend former World Heavyweight Champion, Ricky Steamboat. Steamboat joined Borash in the middle of the ring. Borash before handing over to Steamboat announced that Ricky Steamboat is now a full time member of TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling management. Borash and Steamboat shook hands.
Ricky Steamboat didn’t waste any time and invited AJ Styles and Low Ki to come out and join him in the middle of the ring. AJ came out first quickly followed by Low Ki. Steamboat thanked them both for coming out. Steamboat reminded everyone that a few weeks ago Steamboat came out and heaped praise on AJ Styles even saying that Steamboat couldn’t think of a better man to be the first TNA Champion than AJ Styles. Steamboat now realizes what he said wasn’t fair and disrespectful to others especially Low Ki. TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling is grabbing everyone’s attention and its fair to say that a lot of that attention is thanks to AJ and Low Ki tearing the house down that first night and now Ricky Steamboat believes its fair to say that he couldn’t think of no better way than crowning a first TNA Champion by having the Gauntlet for the Gold Match come down to AJ Styles V Low Ki and this time we get a winner and we crown the first TNA Champion in style. Fans were on their feet. Styles and Low Ki eyes were locked on one another. Steamboat continued to praise Styles and Ki by calling them future legends as Jeff Jarrett stormed down the aisle.
Jeff Jarrett stood at ringside without a microphone but shouting his disapproval. Jarrett called what Ricky Steamboat was saying ridiculous. Jarrett reminded Steamboat that he won another Main Event last week, he’ still undefeated here in TNA, a multi time World Heavyweight Champion and he’s the biggest star in TNA. Jarrett said Low Ki and AJ Styles haven’t shown him anything and they won’t get the job done. AJ Styles leaned over the ropes and challenged Jarrett to fight him. Jarrett shook his head and backed away while Ricky Steamboat screamed that Jarrett was threatened by AJ Styles and Low Ki. Styles turned around to see Low Ki standing in the middle of the ring. Low Ki drew a line in the sand with his foot and challenged AJ Styles to cross it which brought the fans to their feet and AJ went to take Low Ki up on his challenge but Ricky Steamboat got in front of AJ Styles and told them both that there’s was a different kind of fight and they should do it when it matters most when the TNA title is on the line. AJ Styles rolled out of the ring after being asked by Ricky Steamboat. Mike Tenay said everyone wants to be the first TNA Champion and things are starting to heat up.
Wednesday 21st August, 2002; TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling; TNA Championship: Gauntlet for the Gold!!
Jeremy Borash caught up with an angry Jeff Jarrett backstage who was tossing things around in anger. Jeff Jarrett understands that TNA wants to find the brightest stars in the business and there’s no denying that AJ Styles, Low Ki are among the best but the truth is, too compare them to him after only five weeks is disrespectful. They have done nothing yet beat no one yet and there is no way anybody but he is leaving August 21st as the TNA Champion. Jeff Jarrett finished up by saying that Ricky Steamboat has lost his mind.
Chase Stevens the former ‘Golden Gloves’ boxing champion was in the middle of the ring awaiting his opponent ‘Tennessee Cowboy’ James Storm.
Match 4;
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
James Storm V Chase Stevens
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
James Storm V Chase Stevens
James Storm beat Chase Stevens via pin fall after catching Stevens with his Super Kick. James Storm extends his record too 5-0 and while everyone seems to be talking about AJ Styles and Low Ki it would be wrong to take your eyes of James Storm who seems to have what it takes to shock the world and become the first TNA Champion.
Winner; James Storm
Highlights were shown from earlier tonight of Christopher Daniels beating Norman Smiley with minimum effort. Jeremy Borash was with Norman Smiley backstage while Smiley was being checked over by the TNA Doctors. Borash asked Smiley for his thoughts on Christopher Daniels. Smiley said it pains him to admit that tonight he was given a lesson in the middle of the ring live on Pay per View. Smiley has shared the ring with most of the big names in this business at one point or another and he can honestly say he has never been in the ring with any one as good as Christopher Daniels. Smiley said Daniels was always ten steps ahead and Daniels has Smiley thinking whether its time to hang up the boots once and for all. Ricky Steamboat accidentally interrupted the interview to speak to Smiley asking Smiley to meet him in his office when he’s done. Borash tried to ask Steamboat for his thoughts on Jeff Jarrett but Steamboat refused to answer any questions.
Match 5;
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
6 Man Tag Team Match
Chris Harris and Briscoe Brothers (Jay & Mark Briscoe) V Sonny Siaki and Smooth Stallions (Mamaluke & Romeo)
Time Limit; 20 Minutes
6 Man Tag Team Match
Chris Harris and Briscoe Brothers (Jay & Mark Briscoe) V Sonny Siaki and Smooth Stallions (Mamaluke & Romeo)
Mike Tenay noted that during the week both Briscoe Brothers challenged ‘The Monster’ Abyss to a match but TNA Management refused to make either match but even making the challenge shows how brave, crazy or stupid the Briscoe Brothers really are.
It was also announced during the match that next week we would see the debut of another tag team Diamonds in the Rough (Johnny Swinger & Simon Diamond) who had some success the last couple of years in ECW.
Chris Harris and Briscoe Brothers won the match via submission after Harris made Mamaluke tap out to his Texas Cloverleaf. Mamaluke accidently caught Romeo with a kick to the face; Harris speared Romeo off the apron and planted Mamaluke with a Spinebuster before locking Mamaluke in the cloverleaf.
Winners; Chris Harris and Briscoe Brothers
Chris ‘Wildcat’ Harris holds the best record of anyone on the TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling roster 6-0 but Mike Tenay said it was now time to see Harris really tested so we could really see what Chris Harris is made off.
Video package aired looking at William Muellar who was trained by legend and former World Heavyweight Champion, Harley Race before being kicked out of his class and Muellar’s threats that everyone needs to have eyes in the back of their heads because no one will ever see Muellar coming.
Mike Tenay and Don West at ringside hyped next weeks TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling Pay per View. Next week Ron Killings was banned from the arena while we hear from Elix Skipper on why he jumped Ron Killings and his alliance with Monty Brown. Also next week we would see not only the debut of Diamonds in the Rough (Johnny Swinger & Simon Diamond) but also of one of the most exciting wrestlers out there today, the high flying daredevil known as Amazing Red!
Up Next; Tonight’s Main Event; Jerry Lynn V Steve Corino…
Jerry Lynn and Steve Corino were both shown just moments before tonight’s Main Event. Huge Main Event because both men are among the favorites to become the first TNA Champion and at this early stage of TNA’s existence are two of the bigger names so both men who can’t stand one another are going to want to come away with the victory.
Mike Tenay and Don West when speaking about the Main Event mentioned Steve Corino wanting more respect from TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling management and one way for Corino to earn their respect and everyone else’s would be by beating Jerry Lynn.
Match 6;
Main Event
Time Limit; 30 Minutes
Jerry Lynn V Steve Corino
Main Event
Time Limit; 30 Minutes
Jerry Lynn V Steve Corino
Jerry Lynn beat Steve Corino via pin fall after nailing Corino with his TKO. Hard fought match which seen both men give everything and hit all of their big moves but in the end it was Jerry Lynn who came away with the big win.
Winner; Jerry Lynn
Jerry Lynn had his hand raised in victory and motioned for the TNA Championship before Steve Corino floored Jerry Lynn from behind. Corino feeling the effects of the match though collapsed by Lynn too. Referee was ordering Corino to leave the ring when all of a sudden Abyss was stepping over the top rope and into the ring with Jim Mitchell at ringside.
Abyss dropped Steve Corino with a Chokeslam before pulling Lynn back to his feet by the hair. Shock Treatment for Jerry Lynn from ‘The Monster’ Abyss. Jim Mitchell was calling Abyss the first TNA Champion while the attack was going on. Abyss wasn’t finished first Steve Corino took the Black Hole Slam and then Jerry Lynn took one too. Abyss laid out two of the top names in TNA Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling. Mike Tenay asked who could stop Abyss from becoming the first TNA Champion and the Pay per View went off the air with Abyss and Jim Mitchell standing tall in the middle of the ring over both Steve Corino and Jerry Lynn.
