i was watching the latest episode of raw and the wife asked why everyone wears the "briefs" type of trunks. she thinks it contributes to a general generic-ness plaguing wwe of late. she remembers a time when there was more variety to the attire worn.
jericho, edge, benoit and guerrero in full pants, hardys and mysterio in pants, and rvd and angle in singlets immediately come to mind.
the only guys i can think of that don't do the briefs now are kane, cena, cara, rey and ryback.
why is that? was there some mandate?

I'm not really sure, but I had the same question about kickpads. These days it seems like everyone wears kickpads. Cm punk, Tyson Kidd, Daniel Bryan, miz, Jericho, Justin Gabriel, Evan Bourne etc. all wear kickpads

That's just always been the standard of the sport from it's very beginnings, it's hard to explain, and there are tons of guys that have been successful with out wearing them ( HBK, Bret, Undertaker etc) if you watch collegiate wrestling everyone only wears singlets, I don't see how the attire makes everyone generic, a guy like Justin Gabriel is completely different from a guy like Wade Barrett.
Now look at the 90's you started seeing more and more guys go past the whole briefs, and long tights look, and start getting mor gimmicky stuff, it got to a point to wear you had guys looking like they came from the stands, which to me kills it as they don't look like athletes or wrestlers for that matter. Sure there's room for it like the Moondogs, Hillbillies, guys like Kane and Undertaker. But too much of it can call the overall presentation of it.

It's what's in. Currently in the wrestling world, it's seen that wearing or switching over to trunks(briefs, lol) somewhat legitimizes a guy's character or gives him more of a "professional" look. While I agree with that in some cases, I also think it's total BS. I mean I do agree that if you're going to be wrestling, then by all means you should look like a wrestler. But not everyone needs to be wearing trunks to be legit. Singlet, tights, shorts, trunks, whatever works for you.
But just like UFO pants tucked into kickpads were cool on the indy scene ten years ago, trunks are it right now. Especially if a guy is looking to go "serious" as far as his character goes. Switching to trunks seems to be the go to move for that.
I don't mean to say that people are doing it just to be cool. That's not what I'm saying completely. But I believe more guys are wearing trunks nowadays partially for the reasons I stated above.

Actually most wrestlers who came from the Indies are wearing kickpads.

The "look" guys seem to be going for currently is trunks and matching kickpads. Either that or the traditional look of trunks and boots.

Kickpads are an "in look". Not to mention the usefullness in them for sound in kicking.

I'm pretty sure AJ Styles was the one who brought back kickpads knowing how most wrestlers thought he looked ridiculous in them. At one point on the One of a Kind dvd, RVD points out that most wrestlers who spent any time in Japan end up wearing the kickpads.

I've been asking why wrestlers wear trunks for 30 years and I've never found an answer. It's never made sense to me because it doesn't reflect any of the combat sport counterparts: Boxing- loose trunks MMA- loose trunks (for the most part) Freestyle/GR wrestling- singlets Yet pro wrestlers feel the need to perform in their underwear? It is freaking GROSS.

It's just like the late 90's early 2000's where almost everyone wore long tights. Trunks are the big thing again and thats what most are wearing.

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Barrett wear red tights a lot lately? And aren't Gabriel's trunks the shiny kind, as opposed to Barrett's normal/flat kind? And Gabriel's kickpads have "wings" on them? While Barrett wears traditional wrestling boots. Not to mention that they look nothing alike in general, despite having dark hair and facial hair (which could be about half the population........)

Obviously, we who watch the program weekly and know that Gabriel has kickpads with wings and a weird swoopy haircut can tell the difference. But to the untrained eye, they both have very similar looks. I'm just saying you can't call them "completely different."

I heard that Triple H switched to briefs because tights were stigmatised as something that non-maineventers wore... I dont understand why because loads of guys have done well with tights...
I think kick pads look nicer than boots, and they're padded so theres less chance of a nasty injury if someone like Punk accidently connects with a kick.... obviously not the case in the Miz v Kofi match, but theres a lot of momentum behind T.I.P

And their called trunks not briefs or underwear.

Now tonights main event will be B-Radimus Prime & Smurf versus Randy Orton and Da Undertaka in a Tag Match playa. Holla! Holla!

It is freaking GROSS. I have never seen guys wrestle in their underwear. If you think it is underwear and you still watch, then you are gay. Wrestlers have many options-trunks, bicycle shorts, long tights, loose pants, loose shorts, singlets, etc. It is just that certain types of attires like loose shorts are associated with being a jobber while others are more associated with main eventers.
