I really like variants as a MOC collector also, nice having them posed differently in packaging or different colored attires.

As interesting as they are, variants of attires are rather pointless for Mattel if you think about it. Lets say for example they take Jericho in purple with a smiling scan and put it in series 20, and then they reuse the same figure but change the color to blue and give him an angry scan and put him in series 23. Mattel does this all the time, some times without changing the face scan (Im looking at you Rey) so unless its a packaging variant (Ziggler backwards would be neat) its seems a bit unnecessary.
To hit on a point ellisd made about other companies, think about a Marvel comics character. How often does Deadpool change his costume? Better question, how often does he get an action figure made? I could see him getting released in a series in his traditional red outfit, and having either a X-force grey costume variant, or an unmasked variant. But there again, that's different than Randy Orton having red designs on his tights one week, having blue the next, and having a figure in 3 different sets within the same month.

Toy Biz(used to) and Hasbro do variants for about almost every figure. If Mattel did this often it would cost less than producing a new figure with new mold and it's two different attires in one series. There will be more open spots for new people in the Elite series instead of having Cena, Mysterio, and Orton take up one. Just think there could also be more CM Punk and Daniel Bryan Elite figures with different attires. Wouldn't that be great?

I can't name 5 Transformer variants over the last 5 years. It does cost them more unfortunately. Instead of sending a million Sin Cara's in white down the assembly line they would need to shift half over to the red line, which takes time, which costs money. A new head means a new mold plate to cast out of, which costs money. A different accessory might mean a different plastic bubble designed to hold it with the figure, which costs money. And how many more Daniel Bryan attires can we get? We're up to needing "No" and his progressing beard and hair length. How many elite Punks have we had in the last 5 series? 3? I'm not complaining, but I don't see that trend slowing down, do you? Should he be in every series?

Which can have more open spots for other wrestlers who don't have a figure yet. It really help the Elite series especially Cena, Orton and Mysterio who change attires and take up spots in the Elite series and nobody wants them, because they want to see new wrestlers. It saves Mattel money and people get more figures, it's a win-win.

I would REALLY like to see more variants with the flashbacks. Seems like Mankind could of had one in his brown gear. Honky Tonk Man would be another great one too, maybe a diff one with his blue jumpsuit.

I would love attire variants. I think Punk figures would benefit heavily from them.

I see your point as far as Deadpool has the one main look, and they could release his grey or unmasked version as a variant because most would want the regular one anyways and the variants probably wouldn't sell as well as the main costume. But I say in case like Rey Mysterio who has countless attires, some of which look very similar to the others just with some different detailing, it could work for him. Or maybe the in line that we saw pictures of a few months back where they've all got molded on shirts, maybe a limited number of someone could be done with a different shirt design or something. That may make it more of a chase figure than a variant. But if you look at Elite 10 DiBiase, it really worked for him. Because he was someone that hasn't had as many figures as a lot of the roster, so it gave an opportunity to get 2 different attires without having to wait for that other series down the line.

I really love the idea of variants, marvel legends have 2-3 variants per wave and they make hunting a lot more fun

I was talking about the Marvel Legends series. And a variant is simply a repaint of the original figure,so no it actually cost less and people get two attires of the same person. Except you completely ignored the points I made about how it would cost Mattel MORE money, not less, but okay. And I understand every area has it's different peg warmers, but Cena, Orton, and Mysterio all sell pretty well around here. Right now I see some Basic Zach Ryders and Del Rios hanging around with Elite 18 Sin Cara. A local Kmart put Elite 17 out and guess what? The whole case is sitting there but the Cenas are gone. And to your point of "because they want to see new wrestlers" I can say with confidence that COLLECTORS want new faces in the elite wave, but not everyone. Personally I would like to see more and I'm not against all variants, I'm just looking at it from a realistic view. I'm not against those ideas, but look at Mysterio's release rate: as frequently as he goes into the lines, different detailing would be pointless. And if he sits on the shelf as much as onlycitysaint explains because "no one wants him" then no one is going to buy a variant either. As for Dibiase, I can only imagine that was another test to see how variants would do, and I can only guess that it failed since we don't see that many in the line. He also falls into my Deadpool example. Neither guy gets released much, so it made sense. Strictly from a financial standpoint, doing variants of (example of someone that people "want") Punk may be worth it for the collectors that must own everything that has his name on it. With that being said, the collectors make up a very small percentage of the target audience. So if there's a kid that also must own everything Punk, but his parents can only afford a little now and a little later, it makes more sense to just release 1 attire in series 14, another as a TRU exclusive a few months later, and then another in series 20. There are more points to be made, from case breakdown to the massive failure of case ordering from Walmart, Tru, etc. but those are for another time.

Dolphin ziggler from elite 13 is a variant - one with him holding the belt up in the air and one with him holding the belt by his abs
