As a college student in the middle of seeing all of my peers rushing and/or pledging to various frats and sororities, I thought this would be a fitting topic.
I was just wondering what your guys' views on them are. I'm currently pledging for a community service fraternity, and am having a lot of fun. No hazing, no having to get paddled or anything like that, just meeting a bunch of new people and making new friends. It's co-ed too, so it's not a sausage fest or anything.
I know that there is a certain negative stigma attached to frats, and that's probably due to movies but I do agree that people that are in the social fraternities have a sort of "I'm better than you" attitude. Not to mention that it is my opinion that almost all sorority girls become the same person (even with the same voice and hair style) after they join. I do see the merit in it though. I was just wondering what your opinions are. Whether you're in college and see them a lot, went to college already or decided not to attend, or even too young yet and don't have much experience. I thought it'd be a fun discussion.

I never understood them....they seem kind of dumb to me. Seems like their purpose is to build organizations that preserve the mindless groupthink/clique mentality from high school for people who aren't ready to be adults yet.

I would have loved to have fraternities at my college, more so just for the reason of getting to meet new people. But I went to an art school, & they don't have anything like that. At our orientation, they told us there were no sports teams, fraternities, sororities, & our mascot was a check book. I'm a diehard sports fan, so that sucked. But that was what I had to give up to go to my #1 school, so I was OK with it

The one's at my university are insanely popular though the pledging process for several of them are truly difficult.
One sorority makes their pledges sleep at a cemetery over night. They also make their pledges sit in a boiler room, Indian style with only a bottle of water, for 8 hours. I know all of this because my ex-girlfriend, who pledged, told me. Hell, he pledging was a big reason for our breakup.
Most of the frats and sororities make their pledges do stupid things. I know most of them around her forbid their pledges to speak to anyone outside of their pledge class or the people already in the frat/sorority.
I decided not to pledge despite getting bids. Didn't feel like dealing with the pledging process and I don't really regret it much. A lot of my friends who have joined frats and sororities have become hardcore alcoholics and drug addicts (not that that's the case for every one).

From my experiences, *most* frat guys are obnoxious douche bags and borderline alcoholics. They usually tend to find themselves funny but almost always end up getting their asses kicked once they drink too much and let their mouth over load their ass.
Sorority girls are 50/50. Ive found some that were complete whores and some that just wanted to be in sororities to add more stuff to their resume of what they did in college.

I go to a big school (Penn State) and I think all the frats and sororities out here are single-handedly keeping North Face and the yoga pants industry in business. It's like an unofficial uniform.

I went to a community college so I don't know or understand anything about them, their purpose or how they work.

Sororities have always struck me as just a bunch of sluts sleeping around...I realize that this is not always the case but still...
