Why can't people just be ing principled? They have to have some personal story about why they think homosexuals aren't second-class citizens? Really?

Normally I'd agree, but in this case, take the win and run with it. It's not often someone changes their core principals to meaningful levels. In the end, it's for the greater good. Rob Portman comes from a different time, so I understood why he believed that way. Sometimes, something has to hit someone in the heart in order for them realize that "hey, maybe I was wrong to feel this way."

Are you kidding? It took his son coming out for him to change his mind?

This clip is from earlier this week in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
This Rep. (Glenn Gruehagen) introduces a friend of his who apparently "was gay, now isn't anymore!" to an awkward response from the other reps and people in attendance.
This was brought up because Minnesota's now predominantly DFL state legislature is planning on passing a bill which will make gay marriage legal in our state.
While I personally have a hard stance on marriage being left out of the government's hands (shocker there, huh?), I also cannot believe the amount of lies and ridiculous bullcrapthat these people like Rep. Gruehagan spread in an effort to "keep the queers from marrying."
I've had personal run-ins with this Rep. before on other issues, but this solidifies my stance that the Republican Party in this state is a joke. Yes, there ARE good people in the party, but people like Gruehagen - who use their religious beliefs to legislate - have to go. Immediately.

I don't care about marriage either way, but if it makes people happy, good for them.

Better than him sticking to his principles. I think you and I agree on this type of personal freedom, so I mean, I agree with you... It just still pisses me off that these people can't see beyond their PERSONAL VIEWS on something and realize they don't need to control other peoples' lives.
