ah hasbro play talk.......I used Rep as a different person to Smash.
Ax & Smash reigned supreme for years in my WWF fed because I found LOD very difficult to play with.never had Kona Crush or Evil Crush but Crush went heel on Ax & Smash and cost them the straps against the Nastys.
cue Steiners vs Nastys.......great times.
I used Mountie as a manager.....all the guys that Jimmy hart managed he did too.....Honky,Hammer,Nastys,Natural Disasters & Money Inc......
Sarge and USA Duggan were also a force to be reckoned with!!they spent a lot of time fighting with the NDs

I used the TMNT figures along with my WWF ones. they were of a somewhat comparable size. then when the Galoob WCW figures came out,I added them to the mix,so i was booking WWF vs WCW matches a full 10 years before they actually happened!
I actually "stopped" playing with toys in 1992,so I never got other character versions of guys like Crush/Kona Crush and Smash/Repo Man. there were a lot of guys I missed there towards the end of my run with the line in 1992 - Undertaker,Bret Hart,Owen Hart, Kamala ,El Matador,Virgil, The Dragon, and The British Bulldog all come to mind. to say nothing about completely missing 1993 and 1994.

Speaking of against the grain, did anyone else bring non-hasbros into the mix? Or even moreso, non wrestling figures? Since there was no Diesel, I brought in the Terminator initially as Ted DiBiase's bodyguard, then he would go on to win the world title. Mumm-Ra was my Monster heel. Or did anyone give unusual guys winning gimmicks? For some reason, my Brian Knobbs figure was knackered. So that to me meant he was really tough and could take a lot of punishment. So that was his gimmick, kind of like a Mankind. I had a TON of Ninja Turtles in my federation. Casey Jones was one of my biggest stars for a long time. Also had a few GI Joes and about 6 of these 4 inch pirates from the Dollar Store. Skinner was a fairly big star and the pirates were his henchmen. And as for using things other than wrestling figure things as playsets.. the Technodrome was a regular interview area and entrance way and laundry baskets often served as steel cages. Even when I got a real cage I preferred laundry baskets. In regards to Crush.. I never had Demolition Crush. I got Ax then got Smash quite a bit later. Then got Kona Crush when he came out.. and just made him a member of Demolition when it was needed even though he wasn't in the same gear. I never had a Repo Man figure. The only guys I ever had duplicates of were Akeem (2 of them, second one never got used), Razor Ramon (Mannix bootleg & Hasbro. Mannix was Bogus Razor Ramon) and Diesel (Bend Ems and Mannix. Mannix was Bogus Diesel). Usually, my mom wouldn't buy me another one of the same wrestler in the same scale if I already had them.. and if there were different characters to be had, I didn't want the same guy again

I would just use them as different people. I'd come up with my own gimmicks, and have them take over a duplicate guy. I also used to put my ring inside one of those mesh laundry baskets for a cage match, and turn the Hasbro ring upside down for a scaffold match.

Strange, but the way I first started playing with my figures when I was five or six was by watching matches and trying to copy along with what they were doing. Then you had Heenan and Monsoon commentating, etc. For the guys that they didn't make figures of, I just had to substitute someone who looked similar, but I couldn't tell you who I used for who.
I used the Galoob WCW figures with Hasbros. As a kid, I remember noticing that the Galoobs looked more realistic, but I hated that they didn't move.

yeah, the Galoob static poses used to bug the crapout of me, Luger was the worst. couldn't realistically do anything with his upper body.

I actually did know Repo and Smash were the same guy so I retired the Smash figure/character for good after a "loser leave wwf" match with Ultimate Warrior. Crush was already a face in my wwf ,so when his "kona" figure came out , I just made some goofy storyline that Dusty Rhodes "pep talked" Crush into dropping the silly makeup and just be himself to attain greater success . The cool part is I was able to play off that story a couple years later when evil Crush came out . After I had him turn on Savage like in real life, I had him destroy Rhodes ,a retired announcer by then, during an interview . All the while Crush was yelling at Rhodes ,saying "Its your fault Dusty , THIS is the real me!" Some of my favorite stuff came from those Hasbro/Galoob/Just Toys days.

Duplicate figures got a repaint and a new gimmick.
When Ted DiBiase bought the WWF and became a heel authority figure, he tried to recruit Smash to his faction (I retired Ax because my friend's figure lost his fingers). Smash refused and took a beatdown. DiBiase then revealed his new recruit, Smash's twin brother... CRASH!

you know what I love?
how we ALL used to do our own booking! no simple matches smashing guys together. by reading all these comments,I see I wasn't the only one booking actual matches, doing promo's,and setting up long-term storylines.

I remember having Ludvig Borga as an unstoppable heel.he smashed Kerry Von Erich in his debut and in the following weeks he had beaten nearly every good guy wrestler I had......and in convincing fashion.Von Erich,Duggan,Sid,Tatanka,Snuka,Luger,Bossman II,Janetty and many others all fell to Borga.
then I had him face Hogan IV in the Galoob WCW steel cage and he went over there too........he then had a heck of a series with Bret Hart over the title.also had him feud with Warrior for a while......he was one of my most used figures.

Papa Shango once used his voodoo powers to recruit a whole heel stable who turned into mindless zombies. That was until Shango tried to recruit the headshrinkers. Everyone knows a Samoan's head in indestructible. His voodoo didn't penetrate their skulls, and through the power of tag wrestling they freed the other members by beating them in matches.

I remember turning the Ultimate Warrior heel, and he formed a team with Savage ( over 2 1/2 years before it really happened...see,I was a progressive thinker!) to destroy Hulkamania. in a rematch between Hogan and Warrior for WM, Savage did the interference and the 2 beat Hogan bloody ( I used that fake blood gel stuff in the tube they sell around Halloween) til Andre the Giant came out and ran them off, befriending Hogan again.
this set up the main event for MY SummerSlam 1990 - Hogan and Andre vs Savage and Warrior, with the stipulation that if Hagan's team won Savage and Warrior were banned from the WWF for life! if Savage/Warrior won, then they got to pick a time, place, and opponent for a shot at Hogan's title ( he was still Champ. Warrior's loss at Mania VI in my federation led him to turn heel).
Hogan and Andre were poised to win, with Hogan coming off the ropes for the legdrop when suddenly Andre grabbed him, choked him down, and powerslammed Hogan! yes,Andre turned on his partner, and the Savage/Warrior team won! and immediately after, they announced the title match would take place right here and right now! the opponent? a debuting Nature Boy Ric Flair! Hogan was easy prey and Naitch was the NEW WWF World Champion!
confusion reigned, til the next week's superstars of Wrestling where the new Champ came out for an interview, revealing it had been a plan all along, and Flair formed a new Four Horsemen in the WWF with himself,Savage,Warrior, and Andre, and they were utterly unstoppable!
....LOL!....my god,I can't believe I remember all of that!

I also used to team Tatanka, Warior, and Snuka as a Indian (native american) trio. For some reason with the way warior talked i assumed he was native american. And Snuka fit my 8-year-old stereo type too.

My older brother got me into wrestling and he read all of the magazines, so he let me know when a wrestler changed gimmicks. That killed my Hasbro experience since I would only allow Barry Darsow to have one gimmick (Smash).
In my fed: - Demolition Smash > Repo Man - Demolition Crush > Kona Crush/Evil Crush - HBK Shawn Michaels / singles Marty > The Rockers
As a side note my preference amongst Galoobs & Hasbros were: - Galoob Flair > Hasbro Flair - Galoob Steiners > Hasbro Steiners (I thought that Galoob Scott could pull off a better Frankensteiner than Hasbro Scott) - Galoob Lex > Hasbro Lex (I hated the Narcissist gimmick/colorway) - Galoob Sid > Hasbro Sid (If I recall correctly, Galoob Sid towers over Hasbro so it was a bigger drop from a power bomb for Sid's victim).
Last, I couldn't put Anvil with Bret just because of Anvil's outfit.
Looking back, I wish I was more creative with my figures as far as making tag teams and stables. My brother was the creative one. He put IRS and 'Taker together as a tag team and called then "Death & Taxes."

In regards to the OP, I was always aware that Barry Darsow was both Repo Man and Smash, so when Repo was released Smash disappeared but came back shortly after and Repo disappeared.
I didn't start collecting until early 1991, so I deliberately never asked for or bought the single Smash since the tag set was out there. I didn't find the tag set until late summer 1992, so Ax teamed with Rick Steiner (Scott Steiner was the last Galoob I acquired of the set) for a formidable tag team.
Mixing Hasbro and Galoob was great, but no non-wrestlers. When I starting finding Remco's at sales I mixed them for a bit, but the size difference got to me. Then I found the LJN Bendies and was thrilled that Heenan and Albano were there. I finally had managers!

As a kid I realized Crush was Kona Crush, but it wasn't until later that I realized Repo and Smash were the same (I finally saw the tattoo up close).
That being said, I never had repo or either Crush as a kid so It was easy for me :/ But when just the first wave of them were out, Smash was my Heavyweight Champion

I have to say one of my fondest memories was of finding these guys in the first place!
I had NO idea these were coming out. none. the commercials hadn't aired yet, I apparently didn't get any magazines with any ad's in,and being 1990 there was of course no internet. walked into K-B Toy works one early summer day and there they were, hanging on the pegs! I immediately scooped up Ax and Smash, since Demo is,was, and always will be my favorite Tag Team! I desperately wanted an Ultimate Warrior too,but they didn't have any. plus it took some cajoling to get my mom to buy me 2 of them, don't know if I could've squeezed a 3rd one in there! Did eventually get the Warrior, but ended up with my dad driving an hour (one way) to a TRU that was willing to hold him for me. grabbed Macho Man that day too.
