I've been a wrestling fan for as long as my memory allows me to go back. My family was going to see Pedro Morales and Bob Backlund in the 70s before i was even born.
It was my primary interest for most of my life, until the last few years.
It's so different now i could care less about it. My favorite to watch was the Hulkamania era 84-92. The WWF was still presented as a serious sport of a bulk of that period. It was an unashamed wrestling show.
Now it's a pop culture ''thing''. They've gone too much in an entertainment direction for my taste. It's always been sports entertainment under Vince Jr. but it used to be 70 percent wrestling and 30 percent entertainment.
Now it's 80 percent entertainment and 20 percent wrestling.
Let me go touch on my biggest gripes in no particular order.
Commentary: They don't call the match like a real athletic contest. They used to call every hold and touch on the story between the men in perfect fashion. Now it's all about the storyline with little attention to the moves. The sport aspect is gone from commentary. Let me feel like i'm actually watching a competition between two athletes.
Over exposure: We see the same guys wrestle week in and week out. There are barely any fresh matchups because everything is thrown onto tv to fill up airtime.
I loved squash matches because they kept the stars away from each other on tv. I'm not saying we should bring back ham and eggers, they could use popular jobbers like Santino in this role!
5 hours of primetime is too much without over exposing your roster. They did a better job in the early 00's though, i will say. They kept things fresh even with alot of airtime.
Purpose and meaning: Most of the card could be released tomorrow and it wouldn't effect much. Only the guys at the very top have any direction. Everone else is floating around aimlessly.
The midcard titles being misused is the bigest reason for this. If they had serious storylines and depth in the IC and US divisions the show as a whole would be great. Ditto for the tag titles.
Only the WHC and WWE titles/divisions ever get any shine. If your not on that level, chances are you just floating in space.
Superstars being beaten in 3-4 minutes: Why should a pro athlete be defeated in 3-4 minutes? Having superstars lose that easily is so ing stupid. There should definitely be squash matches but having guys above jobber status lose that quickly is plain terrible.
Why is everything so rushed in a 3 hour show that we need to see 2 legit WWE wrestlers only have a 3 minute match? Nothing could comes out of that.
Quality over quanity please.
There are too many segments, when in fact we need much less. I want longer matches and segments with time and effort put into them rather than filling the show up with meaningless shit.
We need 15-20 minutes matches on average with squashes thrown in. The rest of the night can go to a few important inring segments and other promoting.
The shows always looked rushed and terrible. Nothing good comes out of a 3 minute segment.
These are my main issues, anything else would be just nitpicking.
