I really hope the Yankees don't re-sign Cano. Why waste so much of the budget on one player? I would've been cool with Robbie walking had they traded him but letting him walk and not getting anything in return would be tough. Besides, he's not getting an 8 or 10 year contract, I really find that hard to believe.

I'd love for them to resign him but not at that asking price.

Cano wants $300 million? see ya later Robbie....we'll find someone else to play 2b, and I hope there is some other team STUPID enough to take that INSANE contract. This crap has got to stop in baseball. Seriously. How are the Angels doing with $300million for Pujols? 10 year/$30million per contracts are horrendous. At the most you get 3 years actually worthwhile and then another 7 of "why are we paying this guy that much"....sports guys can suck Cano off all they want, he's not worth $300,000,000. No baseball player is. Now obviously this is a negotiation tactic... Cano is 31....he should get no more than 8 years from any team MAX. And nowhere close to $30million a year. You'll end up with a decade of REGRET. He'll be just like everyone else in about 5 years. Lately the Dodgers want to throw money away, they'll take him. 5 years $125mil sounds good.

My guess 6+ an option or two at 30 a year.

Paying someone $30 mil at age 39 isn't a wise move. Then again, some team will over pay. Six years $150 is reasonable.

I feel like Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera should both be pitching in 2014. Maybe I just don't understand, but I'll never get it why guys who are still good just decide to retire when they can clearly still play. I mean, I understand that these guys have lives and families and probably a lot of things they'd like to do with their time that they haven't been able to do over the last 18 years playing baseball.
But I mean, to be one of the ver very few who get to play the game of baseball for a living and get paid VERY well for it....wouldn't you want to play as long as you possibly could? Most guys play until they start to suck and then one year nobody will sign them and then that's it. Mariano River and Andy Pettitte would both be offered $10+ million dollars for next year if they decided to play...even men as wealthy as they are, who would leave that kind of money on the table? ESPECIALLY when you are still able to play, play WELL, and teams still want you?
I'm sure the travel sucks, the time away from their families is hard, and the wear and tear of staying in shape and playing takes a toll on their bodies, especially over 40...but I just don't get how two guys who are playing so well still want to retire.
And from a strictly performance standpoint, I'm sure whoever the Yankees 5th starter is next year will be NOWHERE near as good as Andy Pettitte would have been, even in his age 41-42 season. And Rivera, even in his age 43-44 season would have been one of the top closers in the game.
Maybe I'm just selfish and want to keep them forever....but I just don't see a reason to want to retire if you can still play. And it was even more confusing after the game tonight when Meridith asked Andy how this week has been for him and he said "Terrible, because I know it's over" and he said "It's a shame you have to get old because I love to play and I love to pitch and compete"...and I'm just like DUDE nobody is forcing you to retire! It's not like there is a cut off at a certain age or number of seasons! Andy Pettitte is choosing to retire and then standing there saying he feels terrible that his career is over.
I dunno...it just sucks that they won't be playing anymore. They've meant so much to the team, and they can still play, which is the hardest and most confusing thing to understand.

Thing with Rivera.....
I honestly think if he didn't tear his ACL last year he would not have been retiring THIS year. I think that scared him. His entire career was pretty much flawless. I think he had an arm thing once, but I really can't think of a time where he missed many games due to injury....and certainly not any major stuff.
I think when he did that and was sitting home for a year he probably started to wonder about what would happen if he tore his shoulder, or his arm, or something else. Like that was his body's way of saying "Hey, I'm kinda tired, you wanna cut this baseball crap out please?" He even said it last year....I don't want to go out like this (on the ground writhing in pain)
Plus he got to be home, be with his family, and his kids and probably realized that was more important to him now. Rivera's one of those spiritual guys. He does everything by the book. I would be willing to bet that he is hanging it up NOW because he didn't want his career to end on a bad note. Whether or not it's a factor, he did say that he's been playing through some pain in his arm lately. I really feel it was just one of those things where he just knew it was time to go.
There's nothing wrong with being selfish and wanting him to not do it. Hell after all the gifts, ceremonies and amazing moments this year I wouldn't be pissed in the least if in like June next year he calls up the team and is like "Hey guys? can I come back?" but with the way it ended....there was not a more perfect moment, a more story-like moment. It's kind of fitting. and I think we just have to realize it's over and done with and move on.
As much as I don't want to know what that's like. For the entire time I've been a fan of baseball & this team, Rivera has been on the mound in the 9th. It's literally the worst feeling ever knowing that won't be happening again. It's like realizing that there is only one team in all of sports history that is still undefeated...Time.

It's like realizing that there is only one team in all of sports history that is still undefeated...Time. I totally agree with you. I was worried about Rivera too. I wasn't sure what to expect out of him this year after such a devastating injury last year. I figured if anybody could come back from it, it would be Mo. I still wanted Soriano "just in case". But that's another story. I'll just never understand guys like Pettitte, Mo and even Mussina who all said "I decided before this season that it was my last year, no matter what". How can somebody make that kind of decision 6-7 months ahead of time. You don't know how you'll feel at the end of the season, how well you'll have played, or anything like that. Again, I'll never be in a situation where I'm making millions and millions and millions of dollars to do something year after year after year and be one of the very best ever at it. I guess it's like people who work regular jobs who decide that "this is my last year". I'm just saying that IF it was me, I'd play each season and just see what happens. If at the end of the year I'm still good, you give it another go next year. If my July I'm sucking balls, you make the announcement that this is it and I'll be retiring at the end of the year. It's just frustrating to know that Rivera is retiring while still pitching at such a high level, and that Andy Pettitte is retiring after pitching the last 10 games as the best of any 10 game consecutive stretch at ANY POINT in his career. I'm not religious and I can't look at it from their perspective on that side of it, and I don't have a wife and multiple children of various ages....and they really don't need any more money. I think it's just the travel and the time away from your family....because as sad as Rivera and Pettitte have looked the last week, you can see that part of them wants to keep playing, it's just age mixed in with other factors that have made them decide that now is the time to stop. Maybe the fact that the Yankees are going to be entering a really bad financial stretch that is going to seriously impact the product on the field could possible have something to do with it to. I don't think two Legends like Pettitte and Rivera really see it as worth it to spend 8 months (including Spring Training) away from their families and tear their bodies apart playing baseball over age 40 for a Yankees team that the owners have decided isn't going to be going anywhere positive for the next few years. Either way, I'll miss them both.

Mariano and Andy Pettitte look like they still have 10 years of baseball left in them, but I am glad to see them go.
