Was wondering why they never had a big blow-off Pay-Per-View match when they were feuding in WWF in the early 90's....
Two of the most dominant tag teams, and I know they were leading up to a match - and I remember seeing a dark match when I went to one of my first live TV-taped events in 1991, I think - it was Ultimate Warrior and LOD VS. Ax, Smash, and Crush... as I remember, it was a pretty decent match (by 14 year old standards, which is how old I was at the time).
Or maybe I'm forgetting - did they have a big PPV match? If not, why?
Come to think about it, did LOD face the Hart Foundation as well? Or was WWF flubbing up the tag team ranks even way back then?

theres been a couple of theories.....
one was that Vince went sour on the idea of a feud or even a blow off match after Ax left in November 90.the 2nd was that there was a huge style clash with the two teams.....in their shoot Demolition say they couldn't work with Mike.Joe was fine but Mike was a problem......
I know Hawk & Animal faced Crush & Smash on Superstars but never Ax & Smash.
I think LOD faced The Hart Foundation @ Wrestlefest 1990 and were victorious.feel free to correct me on that one though because I aint sure.

There was basically no chance for it to happen on PPV. By the time LOD came in, Demolition was facing the Harts at Summerslam. By that time Ax was essentially done and had a few months left. There wasn't a PPV every month then, so the next PPV was the Survivor Series, in which Demolition & LOD were on opposing teams. By the time Rumble 91 & WM 7 rolled around, Demolition consisted of Smash & Crush and the dream match was LOD v. Ax & Smash so there was no point. It would be like doing LOD v. The Dudleys when LOD was Animal & Heidenreich. People weren't going to buy it. During that time period though there were Saturday Night's Main Events and Garden Shows, which were the equivalent of B PPV's back then. And I'm pretty sure they faced off at the Garden.

Well they had the match at Survivor Series, it wasn't exactly what it should have been but it did have Ax and Smash on opposite corners to Hawk and Animal, at least that's something. I still wish they'd kept Smash and Crush going a bit longer before dissolving them as if they were garbage. I never liked Ax and have always been high on Crush so I wish they'd had a better run.
Bret said in his book about how disappointed Jim, Animal and he, himself was that the tag match The Harts and LOD had was completely ruined by Hawk's drug problem.

Such a shame, quite possibly the two greatest tag teams of all time (Harts and LOD) and their one and only match was ruined because of one guy.

Demolition vs. the Road Warriors was a case of being at the right place, at the wrong time. The timing and chemistry just was not there. As it pertains to a PPV blow off, it would have been redundant. Unlike today, PPV was not their biggest source of revenue. The Road Warriors came to the WWF 2-3 years too late. Had they came in 1988, one of the biggest tag-team dream matches would have came to fruition. Timing means everything in wrestling. Timing was obviously not on Demolition and the Road Warriors' side.

yup they should have came in 88......instead Vince brought in the POP and thought they could be credible face challengers to Demolition.....why on Earth did he think this.

'88 would have been perfect!
Both LOD and Demolition were in their prime, Tully & Arn would show up a year later, Harts were going strong - the WWE tag team scene would have been unbelievable in '89
By the time LOD/Demo met they had lost their luster in my opinion. Ax/Smash > Smash/Crush and Road Warriors > Rocco.

I guess he got the POP because he couldn't get LOD at that time. I always thought that was pretty obvious. very obvious.its Vinces arrogance here that gets me...... he brings in POP....gives them no entrance music.....and doesn't develop their personality at all.how these two(with this approach) were gonna turn the already loud cheers away from Demolition eludes me completely.also the pathetic attempt to copy Paul Ellering by putting Humperdink with them as The Baron was laughable. I still Think LOD should have feuded with these 2 first and had a "Loser disbands" match at Summerslam 1990.it would have been better than them being quietly disbanded.

I always thought it was weird how people would say that Demolition were copiers of the LOD, when the Powers Of Pain looked EXACTLY like the LOD. Same style mo-hawks, same kind of tights, pretty much the same finishing move, just altered a bit.

I always thought the POP could have been more successful than they were if given the opportunity, especially as heels

Arn & Tully came in 88 too man heck of clearout from the NWA in 88 over wages. The Road Warriors & Flair who were both in talks with Vince in 88 were both paid mega Turner $$ to stay.

It's a shame Demolition were treated so poorly their last year (even if Crush did bring the group down a few levels) because LOD never did well enough for Vince, IMO.
They were doing great for a little while in their first run but by early 1992 they were below Natural Disasters and Money Inc due to not wanting to lose the titles on TV and of course by the end of the run Hawk just left.
Their best days were definitely in the past with NWA. They didn't stay long in 1996 in WCW and Hawk had two forgettable singles runs in 1993 and 1995.
Then they returned to WWF in early 1997 but by early 1998 they were on the way down the card used only to get over the Outlaws. Even the repackaging with Sunny went nowhere. The Hawk titan tron incident and their 1999 return with Paul Ellering aren't even worth mentioning more. The only thing even memorable from the 1997-1999 run was that they broke Henry Godwin's neck which was probably due to their stiffness. He probably could have stuck around a while into the early 00s even if on the lower card.
They were definitely a trail blazing type of team but by the mid to late 1990s they were like a once great, long running TV show that should have been cancelled and it's a shame that Demolition, Vince, Money Inc and Henry Godwin had to suffer in some way or another due to their egos and stiffness and drug problems of Hawk. Thankfully for a rising team and business, Vince wouldn't let them go over the Outlaws and if they had even suggested the idea I would hope that Vince would have sent them packing.

While the Road Warriors held the WWF Tag Team Championship, I feel the WWF didn't know what to do with them. As I stated previously, the Road Warriors came in at the wrong time. The WWF's popularity was beginning to waned by the middle of 1990. Not to mention, the tag team scene was seeing a decrease in its luster and allure at the time. The WWF's tag team scene was at its peak in 1987-1988. Had the Road Warriors came in at that time, their WWF run would have been more memorable. Their run in 1997-1998 was a total abomination. Paring Sunny with the Road Warriors looked odd and out of place. I associate them as being a NWA team, not a WWF team.
I will say it in many more threads here, timing is not only essential but it is crucial in the wrestling industry.
