Did Vince do this to Dusty as a way to "rib" him or was there some other purpose that I am not aware of.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was a rib. Although personally I think that it was the only time that Dusty was even remotely interesting.

But the money must have been good for him to jump ship to the WWF? Why not use him correctly??? Ok, Not trying to be negative toward what you are saying, but, I have to ask, what is correctly? He feuded with Big Bossman, Macho Man Randy Savage & Ted Dibiase throughout his run. Three of WWF's top heels at the time. He picked up a huge win at WrestleMania. He had just come off a a very, very stressful booking job in NWA/WCW. Vince told him to have some fun. He got the polka dots over. And in the process became more memorable for it. Everybody's definition of correctly is different. I thought his WWF run was fine, considering both knew it wasn't going to be a long one, so they had fun with it. In the long run it did absolutely no damage to Dusty's career or legacy whatsoever.

Not saying it did any damage to him or anything like that, and I even like the poka dots. It's just here is a wrestler who held almost every title the NWA has ever had to offer. Yet (I know it was a short run), nothing in the WWF. I know when they brought in Flair it was a huge win on the WWF's part. But to bring Dusty in and never give him a push towards any sort of title?? I just think that was a misuse on Vince's part.

Like I said earlier, Dusty had just come off a long stressful booking and wrestling run in the NWA/WCW, at that point he was just looking for a break and to have some fun. I don't think he cared if he ever got a shot at the WWF Championship. When Dusty came in Warrior was on the rise and was being primed for Hogan's spot. So he had bad timing. When Flair came in later on, it was during the tail end of Hogan's run, so they were getting set to transition away from him anyway. Flair was in a much better spot coming in than Dusty was.

IMO Dusty was great in WWF.
he was over like rover during this period and his feuds with Savage and Dibiase were great.I think the dots started out as a rib....no doubt but Dusty got over regardless in his American Dream persona.at least he wasnt renamed and regimmicked.
and he put UT over on the way out too....that Survivors Series match was a slaughter of Rhodes team.

Dusty didn't need any IC, Tag or WWF Title's in his 89 - 91 run. And Dusty even said he made a chunk load of money in that run, and isn't that what it's all about??
More people will remember Dusty Rhodes from his polka dots, and his matches with Boss Man, Savage and DiBiase than they would his NWA Title matches with Flair, his battles with Blanchard and Anderson and such.

I've never been a big fan of Dusty. Granted I wasn't alive to see the prime of his career but I've gone back and have watched a good chunk of his stuff from the NWA and WWF. I get he was over but I never saw what was so special about him. His work w/ the Horsemen didn't interest me and neither did his WWF stuff.
As for the polka dots I agree w/ others that it didn't hurt him much. He was towards the end of his wrestling career and simply wanted to have fun w/ it. He was placed in feuds w/ top heels and was still over w/ the fans. I'd say he did fine for himself.

Wasn't Sapphire a bus driver they randomly threw on TV? I always thought the poka dots and Sapphire was Vince trying to demean Dusty. But it never worked.
Dusty's career was great till his odd turn to the nWo. Still can't explain that one.

From what I recall seeing (maybe in the Dusty DVD? haven't watched it in years), Dusty considered the polka dots a gentle rib at first. Sort of a small gesture of humiliation for a guy that had been a top dog/booker in their rival promotion for years.
But remember Vince's mindset in 1988-89 and the way other guys got packaged. It's just as likely that Vince looked at Dusty as a great hand and an entertaining guy with a terrible look, and thought "I have to make fans enjoy looking at this guy somehow." So he turned him into a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky, dancing, chubby guy. Lucky for everyone, Dusty had the charisma to get that gimmick over.
I don't think Vince did it to bury Dusty, because Vince is a good businessman. You don't hire a guy of that stature just to bury him. Vince might have gotten a chuckle out of dressing Dusty in polka dots, but I truly believe that on some level, Vince also thought it was a good idea. And hey... it kind of worked out.
Sapphire had worked for other promotions briefly before coming to the WWF, but nowhere high-profile.

Ill agree on the Road Warriors but unless you just completely didnt watch the NWA, Dusty's legacy fans will remember will always be that of his feud with Flair & The Horsemen.
