Today as some of you know was my first day of my Junior year (High School). All my classes went great with the exception of theatre and my US History teacher. Im getting out of Theatre, but the history teacher is a real bunghole. He gave us all a warning that he would be making fun of us, and if we have a problem with it to make sure we tell him before class and that he gives us his word he wont bother us, because "That's just what he does". He started out with roll call and when he got to one of my friends he called him about about wearing a tank top and said" With toothpick arms like that you shouldn't wear that type of shirt. Maybe do some push ups before coming to class so that you can looked pumped." After hearing those words come out of his mouth it really pissed me off and I wanted to go off on him so bad for dissing my friend like that. My friend can take a lot along with dish out a lot so I didn't bother with it. But then he comes to another kid whos about a little bit smaller than my friend and says "Wow, you're about a buck twelve too. Ive got some food over here on my desk you can have cause you could use it more than I could." What really upset me the most was how the kid responded. With the straightest face ive ever seen he said "That's more food than I have at home." I don't know if the kid was being serious, he had decent looking clothes on, but that made the Teacher really look like a bully. Whats worst about it is that the whole class (excluding myself and friend) were just laughing it up like it was no big deal.
I feel really bad for not saying anything, but its not going to happen again. Im going to make sure of that.
What im questioning now is what does all this antibullying even have an effect. It seems the victim has to commit suicide just to get recognition.
Whats your thoughts on this?

you should probably tell your guidance counselor if your teacher's behavior is making you uncomfortable. Worst that'll happen to you is that you'll be moved to a new class

Is that your teacher? In all seriousness though, I'm not sure in the US, but in Mexico, I find this 'anti-bullying' thing total crap. Bullies have existed for decades, yet nobody cared about the subject until it became 'the cool topic' and we started calling it 'bullying' (instead using the spanish term of it). On topic, if what that kid said was true, then that teacher should be ashamed of himself. If that is "what he does", he should at least get to know his students and know where, when and with who he can joke here and there.

I had a teacher like this my freshman year of high school. He didn't last long, let me just say that.

I like when teachers joke around with students but these disses seem very hurtful and not fun. I think he sounds like a jerk. It is unprofessional to make comments like that. I am not saying poking harmless fun at students is wrong but if it is hurtful and ruthless like that he should stop it.

Wow that's pretty insane. You should definitely get this guy fired. And I thought my History teacher who will write you up for saying the word "Hate" was bad...

Well he told the class that if they didn't want to participate in his insults they would be exempted if they told him, so if the rest of the class is fine with it and can take it in good spirits I don't see the problem.

Good to see the youth of today is as soft as a fresh loaf of bread.
In other words, grow a set.

He should have the professionalism to respect his students considering he expects us to do in in the handbook.

Even if the kids say they are ok with it they may just be saying that because they don't feel they can speak against a teacher that can hurt their grade. I had a temp teacher for a science class after the regular teacher quit and he would do the same thing. Mock students clothing or names. It was ridiculous. He was only there a few days before they brought in another temp teacher until we finally got a permanent one.

You cant "shoot the shit" or "bullshit" around with people anymore with out them getting their vaginas filled with sand and getting offended. Everyone with a lick of common sense knows there's the "no fly zones" like racial or homophobic comments but looking at a skinny dude and saying "you need a sammich" and then getting offended over it is ridiculous.

There is a difference between friends doing it and an authority figure doing it to a kid/young adult. Those in positions of authority shouldn't be doing that.

I tend to make cracks at my students' expense but only the ones who start it. Not to mention that there's a line you simply don't cross. If he's as big of a dick as he seems in your explanation, he's certainly over that line.

So in other words, your teacher told you that if you did not wish to be included in the joking around that you should alert him ahead of time, and instead of following his instructions you ignored his offer to be exempt and then sat there and got offended?
Maybe you should acquire some listening comprehension.

he told the class what he was going to do ........ then followed through with it........
where is the problem? I do this exact same thing with all of my employees. If a line is crossed they tell me and I stop. He said to tell him if you do not want this done to you, and if someone didn't say so, then they are fair game.
I personally would have LOVED to had teachers with this much personality in school.
