I don't think this has been done before. So I thought this would be interesting. I'll break it down by era (approximately).
First up: The Hogan Era.
Wrestlemania I: Tito Santana vs. The Executioner. Wrestlemania 2: Paul Orndorff vs. Don Muraco (w/ Mr. Fuji). Wrestlemania III: Rick Martel & Tom Zenk vs. Bob Orton & Don Muraco (w/. Mr Fuji) Wrestlemania IV: Battle Royal (won by Bad News Brown). Wrestlemania V: Hercules vs. King Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan). Wrestlemania VI: Rick Martel vs. Koko B. Ware. Wrestlemania VII: The Rockers vs. Barbarian & Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan). Wrestlemania VIII: Shawn Michaels (w/ Sensatinal Sherri) vs. Tito Santana.
Wow, it's weird that Shawn opened so many WM's in a row (especially as he opened WM9).

Battle royale from Wrestlemania IV.
Bret smashing the trophy was cool.

I liked the Rockers v. Barbarian & Haku. It was a good opener and it was nice to see the Rockers get the win. Also with as many times he has been with the company, it was the last time Marty Jannetty had a WrestleMania match.

Battle royale from Wrestlemania IV. Bret smashing the trophy was cool. I like the Battle Royal, but I always hated how Neidhart was eliminated so quickly by George Steele who didn't even get in the ring.

This is Tough one. When I was younger I had WM2 and WM4 tapes...so those 2 beginning matches brings back some good nostalgia, but I had to go with Shawn and Tito. That match was sweet.

The best part about Shawn and Tito, is the opening face off. If you watch, you could see Tito mouth the words to Shawn, "You got a booger in your nose". Then Shawn proceeds to grab it and flick it away. Classic stuff! Never realized it until a friend told me a few years ago, now I can't watch that match without noticing it.

The Rockers vs Barbarian and Haku. Great, quick paced match. Big props to Haku who was able to keep up w/ Shawn and Marty's high paced offense.
HBK/Tito is decent, but Tito looked sluggish as hell. Shawn put on a solid show but looked to be constrained by Tito. He had to slow himself down a lot.

Yeah, this is definitely between 4, 7, and 8. Went with 8. I think everything about Shawn coming up as a heel at that time was pretty awesome and 8 was a great Mania in general imo. Tito was pretty under appreciated as an in-ring guy, so the match was great, and Sherri was obviously Sensational. I think that was a really big moment in Shawn's career at the time to get that solo win at Mania and kickoff the show. I still, for the life of me, can't figure out why Flair vs Savage didn't close that card. I know Hogan was the man, but his match with Sid should have been flipped with Savage and Flair. Either that, or Flair should have just faced Hogan as planned.

Either that, or Flair should have just faced Hogan as planned. Under different circumstances I agree with you 100%. It was just the aftermath of both matches I think that determined their placement on the card. If it was just Savage winning the title and celebrating with Liz, then yes that should have closed the show, but all of the Flair drama and pull apart after the match wouldn't have ended the show with that one memorable moment. On the same token Hogan v. Sid was garbage and had a crappy finish, but the return of the Warrior and him & Hogan celebrating at the end of the show, was the moment they were looking for. Warrior's return halfway through the card, would have derailed the rest of the show and would have taken away greatly from Savage's title win later on. So while I see where you are coming from it just made more feasible sense to do it the way it was done.

Hogan pulled his BS by having his crappy match w/ Sid go on last. Just further proof that McMahon never saw Savage as a draw. Had Hogan's match been in the middle of the card then yeah the DQ finish would have been fine. But to end a WM w/ a DQ is stupid as hell. Savage/Flair should have gone on last w/ Savage and Liz celebrating. They could then do a post-show interview with Flair promising that it isn't over.
The match w/ Sid was terrible as well. They spent nearly 10 minutes just doing two crappy submission holds. Rumor has it that because Hogan would be shooting a movie soon after that he didn't want to take any bumps and risk getting injured (not that Hogan ever took many bumps, let alone a dangerous one).

I think half the reason that Hogan went on last is because they wanted to end the show with Warrior returning.

While I agree with you about Hogan's BS antics, I think this was a situation that had more to do with the surprise return of the Warrior, than it did Vince's faith in Savage as a draw. While the DQ ending was garbage, no doubt about it. If you would have had Warrior return halfway through the show, it would have killed off the crowd for Savage's title win. Much like when Hogan/Rock went on before HHH/Y2J at WMX8. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, the match placement, was more about the post match scenarios than the actual matches themselves. While I agree with you that Savage and Flair going on last would have been great, in the grand scheme, what they actually did was more feasible and made more sense.

I wouldn't compare this to the Hogan/Rock situation at WM18. HHH and Jericho had a crap feud leading into the event and nobody gave a crap about it. Hogan's big WM return was what people want to see. W/ WM8, Savage and Flair had a compelling storyline that everyone was invested in. Its not like it was a match nobody cared about. It was a big deal at the time w/ Liz in the middle of them. Warrior returning in the middle of the card would have given the crowd plenty of time to recoup and re-energize before the main event. If we are to assume that Vince felt the crowd would be dead after Warrior's return then it makes no sense that Warrior and Savage weren't the main event the year before. Hogan and Slaughter's storyline was basically dead by the time we got to the event while everyone was interested in Savage/Warrior. Savage and Liz getting back together stole the show and the crowd was dead by the main event. I still say that it was Hogan's BS that led to him and Sid main eventing.

Savage and Liz getting back together stole the show and the crowd was dead by the main event. I still say that it was Hogan's BS that led to him and Sid main eventing. Good point on WM7. I will never deny when someone makes a valid point. I wasn't comparing storylines with the Savage/Flair v. Jericho/HHH, I was just saying crowd reaction and maybe that wasn't the best choice of comparison. But at the same time, they were hyping it as Hogan's final match in the company "at that time" and that he was leaving, and he was their biggest star for the previous 10 years add to that the surprise of the Warrior, as much as that match with Sid sucked and so did the DQ ending, it made sense for it to close the show for those reasons. I would have liked to have seen Savage & Flair close a Mania too, but when I was watching at that point, I wouldn't haved cared less if the The Natrual Disasters v. Money Inc. closed the show. I think if the match ended with Hogan putting Sid over and not the DQ finish, there wouldn't be much of a problem. But this is 21 years ago, it really is irrelevant at this point. I have no doubt Hogan BS was involved, not in match placement however, but rather the finish. Because the way they were hyping it being Hogan's last WWF match, there was no way he wasn't going to close the show.

It also cracks me up when Tito Santana helps Reba McIntyre out of the ring and Bobby Heenan says, "How nice of Tito to help his sister out of the ring!" Monsoon questions, "His sister?" Heenan replies, "Yeah, Tito's sister, Ar - RIBA McIntyre!" That cracks me up every time! I went with the Wrestlemania IV Battle Royal though. I've always liked Bad News and Bret, so the ending was fantastic for me.
