Let me just preface this by stating that I am an avid collector of the Elite series figures. The reason why I only collect these ones is because they are actually playable. Sure, any of the Mattel figures could be deemed playable, but really, how much can you do with the Basic figures? For instance, let's say I want to have one of my figures to perform a face-buster (X-Pac style): How can I do so if the legs of the figure that I'm using to perform this maneuver aren't engineered to split open? This isn't an issue with the Elite series figures, and that's why I opt only to pursue those ones.
And now, onto my one and only grievance with the Elite series: The large knee pads.
I understand why these were created. Collectors demand the most realistic adaptations possible when seeking new additions to their figure collections. For instance, I read a thread recently on here in which the writer was issuing a complaint against the Elite 27 Billy Gunn prototype photo. He claimed that Mattel should have used larger knee pads that go all the way down to the boots. And again, I understand his reasoning for that demand: He wants his figures to look as close to the real thing as possible. But keep in mind, for those of us who collect with the intent of playing with them, those larger knee pads can make it very difficult to nearly impossible.
For instance, I'm sure the majority of people on here have all probably purchased at least one of the Elite series Kofi Kingston figures. And to those who this may concern, have you taken it out of the package? If you have, I encourage you to take that figure in one hand, take any other figure in your other hand, and then try to make Kofi deliver Trouble In Paradise to the other figure as quickly and smoothly as you possibly can. Spoiler: BLOWN SPOT! It's awkward and slow. Kofi is supposed to be quick and agile. So, for those of us who this annoys, is our solution simply to just remove the knee pads altogether from our Kingston figures? I'd hope not, 'cause that'd look very unrealistic if done to a figure in which he's wearing the very short trunks. Fortunately, though, Kofi's got a new figure coming out in the Elite 27 lineup, and I'm hoping it'll feature him sporting his newer long tights. Should this be the case, then those of us to whom this complaint concerns can simply remove the large knee pads and play on, and as long as he's wearing the long tights, then the absence of knee pads altogether won't look unrealistic.
What about other figures whom this problem may concern? For instance, Elite series CM Punk figures have always been made with the aforementioned large knee pads. Ever try making one perform a GTS? Slow and awkward. CM Punk doesn't miss spots, nor should his figures! But again, Mattel seems to have already corrected this problem with the next Elite CM Punk figure that they're intending to release. It's featured in the video above. It's the one most resembling his current look (with the mutton chops). He's wearing smaller knee pads, which enable swift and easy maneuvering for players like myself. (Yay!)
But, for future references, what about all other Elite series figures in general? Would it be asking too much to request that Mattel do away with the larger knee pads altogether, in favor of using only the smaller ones? Or would the rest of you readers riot?!
Please share your thoughts on this matter. Thanks!
