bustedopen Mid-Carder
Nov 5, 2013 at 3:58pm Quote MattelDesignTeam said:We have the rights to do him and we plan on making a great X-Pac figure. But it will not be as soon as expected. Due to the fact that many of our contracts we signed for Legends are expiring at the end of 2014 we have filled a large portion of the Flashback slots in 2014 with people we have under contract. if we did not produce their figures byt the end of 2014 we would lose the rights. We have some people under contract we really wanted in the line so they took precedence over a brand new signee such as X-Pac. Bruno Sammartino was the first example of this. Coincidentally he did sign the deal with WWE as we were working on the figure which helped give it a little extra publicity. So yes he is coming but no he is not being worked on right now.
If I am reading this correctly, it is hard to believe that Mattel would sign Bruno to an individual deal but NOT Ric Flair or Goldberg, which would sell 10x better than Bruno ever would. Doesn't make much since to me
This is an old post but it never got any response on the suggestion board. I just can't believe Mattel would sign Bruno to a deal (if I read right they signed him before WWE did) but not Flair or Goldberg. I can see may e not Hogan because its probably a lock that he signs with WWE but damn!

Bruno signed a legends deal. Hence why he's getting a figure....is DLC for the new videogame....was put in HOF etc.
Goldberg is greedy....and thinks he's too good for everyone/everything. If WWE can sign Bruno/Macho/Warrior......but can't come to terms with Goldberg, than this guy must really be a nightmare to deal with.
Flair doesn't want to sign a legends deal. Ppl on legends deals are mostly guys that don't wrestle anymore....and are sitting at home and doing the occasional appearance and autograph session.
Flair is a mover and a shaker. this dude will never be sitting at home with nothing to do. He probably thinks he can still wrestle an Iron Man thumbtack death match against Great Muta, if he was asked. Legends contract wouldn't allow that.

They've had Bruno signed for a long time, I remember reading it when the line first started and they were still getting people themselves instead of just through WWE

Coincidentally he did sign the deal with WWE as we were working on the figure which helped give it a little extra publicity. This is the interesting part. They were working on him before he signed. So Mattel has names signed to a legend deal that aren't signed to a WWE merchandise deal? I think they have a Flair and Goldberg already sculpted, and they are waiting for the signature on the contract! Bill said in one of the RSF inteviews that he would try and make a 1 of 1 La Parka for his personal collection. I'm almost 100% positive that there are employees that, on their off or down time, have sculpted and digitally layed out a handfull of Legends. Maybe Mattel / Bill have set these templetes aside for future use.

Does Lex Luger have a legends deal? They're making his figure, and I was under the impression that Mattel sought him out just for the purpose of making his action figure....
So a better question/example is... if they can get Lex Luger, why can't they get Ric Flair?
And what was the nature of the deal with WWE/Ric Flair from last summer, when he appeared at the 2k Panel & allegedly embarrassed WWE? Was it just a one-shot deal?

i don't believe that Mattel personally signs anyone to deals.
I think they only use existing legends contracts.
Where as Jakks & the videogame ppl (THQ, now 2k) would sign ppl on individual basis.
I still think that Mattel isn't even aware that they own the WWE franchise. Bill and like 3 other dudes just make this stuff in some basement

I believe Jerry(RoR) said Mattel was ready to sign Flair right before Flair's drunken debacle from the 2k14 panel. So since WWE wasn't happy with Flair, WWE nixed it.... for now. WWE knows there is still money in the name Ric Flair, so I'd assume it won't be long.

Mattel signed Bruno back when they were signing people for Legends, like Savage and Warrior (whose status is unclear after 2014). Bruno's deal was ending this year if they didn't produce him, so they scheduled him for the end of the year. Bruno wound up signing a Legends deal anyhow this year. It all aligned by coincidence with his HOF induction.
Ric Flair was in TNA when they were doing Legends. He was probably off-limits, though I do not know the nature of his contract - I know for some reason Jakks weren't allowed to make a figure of him. I think it had to do with some other contractual thing with WWE. Before Flair left, Mattel stopped signing people after Legends failed at retail & Matty.
If they wanted to do Flair, they could work out a deal with him. They're seemingly waiting for WWE to sign him to a Legends contract. It wasn't a thing where they signed Bruno but not Flair. They just couldn't get to him, and then their policy changed which has to do with different departments they'd have to convince again to let them sign marquee talent.
I have no idea what happened with Luger. That could indicate something has recently changed with their signing policy, or maybe he signed a merchandising agreement with WWE separate from the Legends deal.

Ric will happen at some point... And I will for sure pick him up, but I have little interest in a Goldberg figure... Bruno > Goldberg if nothing else just for the sake of history (although to be fair Bill does have his place too... just beneath Bruno and Ric)

Ok that makes more sense. I didn't realize Bruno had been signed since that first wave of people
By the way does anyone have a link or list of the original poll or whatever all these names were in back in the day? I've never seen it
Thanks

Im sure it would cost Mattel a lot of money to sign Flair individually, so they are waiting until WWE eventually signs him to a Legends (or event talent??) contract. This is probably one of the factors in the Legends failure, is that they had to spend their own money on talent.

As others have said, Bruno is not on a Mattel deal. He signed a merchandising deal with WWE.

A Flair fix up is easy as hell, Funk body with CS Flair head and your set, CS robe fits perfect as well.
