part of it never would've happened, though,as Vince wouldn't allow any "current" talent into the Legends line back then,so no Taker,Triple H,HBK,Kane,Christian,Edge,Goldust,Lawler,or the Giant could've been made.

Wow all those sets are put together really nice. I gotta say that the hall of fame series helped kill it off too. The retailer would be afraid to order anything with a legends name. I really wished It could have lived on. I loved the art work on the packages too. I understand the attire choices. I assume they wanted to do something different than Jakks Don't really like them but I do understand One that I do love is the Heel Jake the Snake though the problem there is,if you're going to make unconventional figure choices, you need some anchors. and more than 1. Series 1 had, basically, only Austin. Series 2 didn't have any anchors as far as I'm concerned. Series 3 only had the Rock. Series 4 only had Warrior. Series 5 only Savage. and Series 6 only Warrior again. if they did a mix of big names with lesser known, shorter packed figures, the line could've worked. something like, based upon who they had signed: Series 1: Stone Cold Steve Austin, Ultimate Warrior, Hawk,Animal, Ricky Steamboat, Shawn Michaels Series 2: Macho Man Randy Savage,Dusty Rhodes,Kane,Rick Rude, Jake Roberts, Kamala Series 3: The Rock,Bret Hart, Vader,British Bulldog,Brian Pillman, Sgt. Slaughter Series 4: The Undertaker, Ax, Smash,Paul Orndorff, Ultimate Warrior, Kerry Von Erich Series 5: Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Bam Bam Bigelow,Rick Martel,Mr. Perfect,George Steele, Macho King Randy Savage Series 6: Shawn Michaels, Andre The Giant, Iron Sheik,Terry Funk, Eddie Guerrero, Edge Series 7: Stone Cold Steve Austin,Texas Tornado,Yokozuna,Magnum TA, Christian, Bret Hart Series 8: Honky Tonk Man, Miss Elizabeth, Kevin Nash, The Undertaker,Jerry Lawler,Papa Shango Series 9: Kane, nWo Macho Man, Trish Stratus, The Ultimate Warrior,Big Boss Man. Series 9: Rocky Maivia, Mankind,The Giant,Kevin Von Erich,Akeem, Diesel ...lineup's like that,I think, would've made Legends a hit!

I think Mikey1974 has the lineup issue pretty much nailed. Had they waited a little longer and had the bigger names in their iconic attires the line might still be going. We could have waited on guys like George Steele and Hillbilly Jim until further into the line...
The 2-packs initially should have been LoD, demolition, hart foundation, then rockers and so on.
Huge missed oppurtunity. I wish they'd try again, maybe quarterly waves of like 4 guys.

More than anything I just think people couldn't afford to keep up with another line of figures at $16+ a pop.

The main reasons Legends did not do as well as Mattel needed them to do were: skyrocketing labor, and production costs & the current economic climate. Some of you guys can give me line-ups as the main factor all you want, but that wasn't it. In the current world economy...there simply aren't enough classic wrestling figure collectors to allow a stand-alone Legends line to work at retail. Honestly...there aren't enough collectors to allow a collector line of any kind flourish at retail right now.

Because there isn't a market for a high-priced, high-quality legends line. Collectors were used to the cheap, poor-quality legends figures that Jakks did, didn't want to restart legends collections, and so the figures rotted on shelves until they got to $3 clearance stores. I think you nailed it. I also think they would kill if mattel took another try at it And sell them how? Retailers don't want them. Mattel doesn't just magic these things onto shelves. Retailers have to order them. Retailers stopped ordering legends figures.

I feel like if Mattel tried it again in a year or 2 they would be successful this time.

they were super expensive compared to what we were used to paying for jakks. I remember buying the first set of legends and couldn't believe how much i paid for them. not to mention that eventually all of them had a leg crack off. i think they went too old school on some of the outfit choices and figures in general right out of the gate.

I'm sure with 2-3 years of super strong sales from the line they could swing it. They obviously sell retailers on FlexForce, Strikers, Slammers and all that other junk that ends up going to Big Lots

They obviously sell retailers on FlexForce, Strikers, Slammers and all that other junk that ends up going to Big Lots Yes, that's part of Mattel's job. And either the retailers aren't biting, or Mattel can't make the numbers work. There most likely aren't enough wrestling fans that have the money and inclination to buy an extra six elite-style wrestling figures every two or three months on top of the 36-42 that already come out each year. If they got a legends line into stores, maybe some of us buy three elites and three legends, maybe we buy four of each, or five of one and two of another. Unless there are literally tens of thousands of people who can afford to buy all six from both lines and/or literally tens of thousands of people who don't buy figures now but would buy a legends line, then the two lines cut into each other's sales and it hurts both. The last thing Mattel (and collectors of these dolls) need is for a legends line to reappear only to crash and burn again, this time taking the elite line (or at least the chances of flashbacks in the elite line) with it. The current system isn't broken. It doesn't need fixing, especially when the fix is a system that didn't work before.

Imo if they would have waited till they had a little bit more of a following for mattel figs it would have worked....like if they were to launch the legends line now instead of back then I think it would be a success

if they would've just waited on year, til Summer of 2011,to have the bigger names signed AND to give us breathing room,it might've been a whole different story.
I know I'm not the only one who,by Summer of 2010, felt overwhelmed. Jesus Christ, there were so many figures coming out,so frequently, one on top of another, that it was crazy from a financial standpoint! and then in the middle of all that,to drop ANOTHER line on us,was suicidal!
at least by summer of 2011,most collector's would've had a basic setup/collection of the guys they wanted, and would only need to add new Superstars as they were released,or updated looks. there wasn't as much to have to buy,and would free more money for starting a new sub-line.

I was in the minority here, but I was thrilled with getting attires that jakks hadn't done yet. So Sarge,Snuka,Road Warriors, and especially Rude were very welcome additions for me. But I totally get why people didn't get on board. On the other hand maybe they would have sold if the general mix of stars was done better. I think that's why the reception was, initially, lukewarm. But in my neck of the woods all 5 series sold briskly and never stuck around long. The only exceptions to that rule were the TRU 2 packs and that waste of a HoF series at Kmart. I'm ok with the flashbacks for now though. I don't have the funds for another series right now. But it would be nice if they were relaunched sometime. I think the reception now would be more like what they expected almost 4 years ago.

Series 3,4,5, and most of 6 sold very briskly around here! Hell,Series 3 was near impossible to find at one point!
problem was,Series 1 and 2 clogged up a lot of pegs, then the HOF series put even MORE of them on the pegs to rot. so that backlogged everything. that and the TRU 2-packs. they could've been allocated so much better as well:
Series 1:
LOD Roddy Piper and Bob Orton The Rockers
Series 2:
Demolition Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff The Bushwhackers

I feel like if Mattel tried it again in a year or 2 they would be successful this time. Exactly. Just make sure they put guys people want. I'm sorry but I've seen like 3 Von Erich's matches. There was no need to have Kerry have two in one series.Even though he's in my top 10 favorite wrestlers no kid probably ever bought Mr wonderful

No matter what I was not going to replace all of my classic superstars with new mattel legends. Yes mattel figs are better but alot of the CS figs are really great. Maybe I would pick up a few big name legends but I don't need a Jakks Slaughter and a Mattel Slaughter for example.
