So as usual, I went to my local Figure Specialist and they told me this:
MATTEL can charge alot of figures - a big load more than I thought.
I thought they'd sell them for about 50p/£1 each...Well no they do not!
Smaller business' (namely TESCO) would get basics for around £7 including shipping and tax, whcih means they only make £2.99 a figure!
Then the shop said that Argos' deal of 2 basics for £15 would only earn them in sight of £1/£2 a figure!
Also, they said TRU/Smyths will get them cheaper in the UK because they buy them in the Tens of thousands!
''They will charge Toys R Us around about £4 per basic after tax and around £9 for an elite, as well as £8 a battle pack''
So this just tells me how much the companies make. I mean first of all, shipping from US-UK is quite a cost, cheaper for business' obviously. But when you think about it TRU in UK earn about £9 on an elite and £7 per basic plus £13 on a battle pack! Now take away shipping for the US, thats about £1 per basic, £2.33 for an elite and £4.88 for a battle pack. Converted US currency that is: $2 per basic, $5 an elite and $9 per battle pack... Think how much your stores earn!
This may not be 100% accurate but these guys know their stuff

Well, I know at the company I work for we pay about $6 for basics and about $13 for elites so the profit margins are about what I'd expect for a retailer.

Quite a lot of the wholesalers charge more/ or less depending on how much is bought. That goes for anything. I know some of the smaller wrestling sites in the UK it costs them about £8 a basic and £13 an elite because they dont order more than a few hundred at a time

Speaking as a former sole-trading wholesaler and knowing of a slightly bigger company who used to buy figures at wholesale, I can attest to the fact that companies give greater discounts on the more that you buy, it is strictly common sense that a great discount can be given the more you buy, that's just common sense.
I used to get a case of jakks RA figures at around £3.70 a figure in the heyday of jakks but my friends company used to get them at roughly £2.70 due to the volume he bought in and places like TRU, Woolworths etc used to get them in at £2 a figure.

Yes the bigger the company/order the cheaper they pay. Most companies do that. I know UPS does this as well the larger the company account the less they pay in shipping rates.
