I saw Brett as a kid he was bland boring and vanilla to me . Even then his slow pace didn't excite me one bit. I was a curt Hennig Rick Rude or Ted Dibiase style guy . I'll give heel Brett his due his work in 1997 was one of the few times when he picked up a mic that i didnt consider changing the channels. Brett's style just wasn't my cup of tea. I understand that. Like I said everyone has an opinion and I am not here to bash it. I like the guy, and have a lot of respect for what he accomplished. The constant bashing of a number of wrestlers since he has retired is a little off putting though.

Bret Hart was an incredible technical wrestler. Yes, listening to him on the mic was like watching grass grow. And yes, sometimes his matches were like clockwork. You knew the sequence of his moveset by hart (see what I did there). But on many people's top 10 matches list, he is probably involved in 3 of them.
But as far as overrated from a wrestling standpoint.......I'd say Hogan and Warrior. Nobody can deny their star quality. Hogan is still the biggest star in history, but he was stiff even in the 80's. And Warrior was absurd and dangerous. WM VI is so iconic because it was the first time we had champ vs champ and face vs face. And not just any faces, the two biggest in the business. But none of that was wrestling. Hogan knew 3 moves. He makes Cena look like Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle's lovechild.

except Hogan knew how to sell in angles & matches with his reactions etc.
that's why I would never compare Cena & Hogan.

To be able to be a top star in the states and Japan, you have to be a good worker.

Shawn Michaels in 97-98 may have done a fantastic job playing his character outside of the ring but he was banged up and seemed like a shell of his former self when in the ring. Michaels wrestled sparingly on Raw during this period. In pay per views during this period he faced Undertaker 3 times, Steve Austin twice, Ken Shamrock once, and Bret Hart once in Montreal. He is completely overshadowed in three of those matches between the debut of Kane, the screwjob and the beginning of the Austin era. While Shawn Michaels is easily one of the best in ring performers ever, you could tell that he needed a break here. For me Shawn Michael's in ring work over this time period is overrated.

The first that popped into my head was Owen Hart, followed by Lex Luger

I'm going to have to say Bret Hart.
I thought he was phenomenal, truly one of the best ever. But, he was not as good as a lot of people say he is.
His matches were picture perfect, but he was silent in the ring and he often did things very slowly. He connected with fans but not to the level that some people would like to think he did or revisionist wrestling historians want us to believe.
He was truly outstanding as a technical wrestler and could have been the best trainer in the world because he understood wrestling and how to create art on the canvas, but when it comes down to it, the guy wasn't all that entertaining (with the exception of 1997, as others have said).

I think some of you don't quite understand the term "overrated"...Who in the world rates Hogan or Goldberg highly as far as quality work is concerned?

I'm gonna say Goldberg. He had a cool gimmick and was a powerhouse, but his wrestling skill wasn't great.

Oh dear. This thread was supposed to be a thread collecting people's opinions, but instead it's turned into discussions of people telling other people that their OPINION is "wrong". Seriously? Are some people really that stupid that they still don't understand what an opinion is, and so don't understand that an opinion cannot possibly be wrong?
For example, a few people have mentioned The Ultimate Warrior. Personally I disagree with their opinion, but I still respect their right to an opinion. I'm not going to go on a rant to tell them that they are "wrong", because I know that they deserve to have their own opinion.
Ugh, it's times like these that I wonder why I click on certain threads on this forum...

Jeff Jarrett. I couldn't stand his work. I thought he attracted negative heat. I'd also put Brutus Beefcake and his Wrestlemania 9 stint in this. Waste of space. Diesel wasn't to great either. Nice topic btw

The first that popped into my head was Owen Hart, followed by Lex Luger If anything Lex was under rated, a lot of people trash him but he was a good worker. My reasoning for Luger was more so because the guy had SO many opportunities throughout the 90s & he never really capitalized on them. I think its fair to make the argument that the WWE botched the Summerslam match with Yokozuna, so I'm omitting that from thought. But in WCW, I always felt like he had a high spot on the roster but never did anything with it.

It's between Bret and Owen, I'd give the edge to Owen.

I don't think I've seen HHH mentioned yet. The WWE wants to put him on the level of Rock/Austin when he was never there. In that sense, he is definitely overrated imo.

Kevin Nash / Diesel
There is literally one match out of WWF/WCW of his from that time period that I actually enjoy. Beyond that, I've always thought he was a slow wrestler with a lot of limitations on what he can and can't do.
The one match I did enjoy was Wrestlemania 13 against the Undertaker, which I attribute to Undertaker's almost equal size and ability to move around better in the ring.
