I've got a LOT of Mattels. Over 700. It's getting to the point where its tough for me to even display them all. Just because I've only got so much room to "play" with. I don't want to stop collecting, really never plan on that unless I absolutely have to. And one thing I'm not gonna do is get rid of any Elites. My Plan from Day 1 of Mattel's launch was to collect the entire Elite line + extras (like exclusives, etc.)
But lately I've been thinking that I should start to get rid of some basics. I like collecting basics, for sheer variety and amount. But more and more I find myself wondering why I have __(#) of wade barrett, or kofi kingston.
I already kind of started the process, by attempting to get rid of basics with the same exact attire (just different headscans) or an attire that is very similar to others (like B9 Mark Henry) but I'm wondering if I should take it a step further and go with any attires that are the same as Elites at least for guys who have a number of different ones.
What would you do if you were going to downsize? I'd like some feedback/thoughts, etc. If you had hundreds of Mattels and wanted to slim down, how would you decide what to get rid of?

I've been thinking about packing up more of my CS doubles only keeping Hart, LOD, Mr Perfect, Bulldogs and Flair doubles. And with my Mattel basics I am thinking of packing up all repairs except for Triple H and Orton.

I would do what you're doing in the sense of dumping the basics with same/similar attire of other basics. Also, feel like going you going the extra step of dumping same attires as elites isn't such a bad idea. Mainly the basics I'd hang on to are "first time in the line" and significant battle pack pairings.

Dump some basics that you really don't need such as john cenas, Henry's, or any basic figure that is the same as elite, dump the basic one

Just box away any basics that you don't really care about, so that way you still have them but don't need to worry about space as much?

I would get rid of your basics but keep the ones that don't have elites at the minute. Also I would keep the like of the black sin cara as I see him as a different character to the other sin caras. Personally I would keep the newest version of the figure only (unless mattel did a bad job ie, I hate the newest Zigglar elite headscan so I keep the one before it) & only keep duplicates of a character if the attire is a "defining moment" type ie, Punk's MITB elite. Hope that makes sense but that's just me.

I'm sure I don't have as many as you chip but I've came to the same Conclusion elites only and some basics but I look and say why so many of this or that person especially if I could care less for the person .I've tried selling my basics n terrible thing is ..it's so hard to even sell them for cheaper then retail I hate it lol but they'll go eventually but damn I hate space being an issue and lately mattels been pumping out basics like crazy

I had a similar problem not long ago. I cleared out my basics and only kept the divas. I kind if view the basic line as the "play with" line. Unless there is somebody with a basic and no elite, what's the point?!?? Very few basics I kept. B16 warrior comes to mind. Maybe the swoggles, Eddie and khali. Unless of course, your a completionist lol. Then your just screwed!!!!

I've been thinking about this too. I never intended to collect as many as I have now. I told myself going in that if I wouldn't buy multiples of one person. For example, I only need one version of Brock, Warrior, or Undertaker. But all the versions and variations in attires is what drew me in to collect in the first place. Some of these figures are so damn beautiful! But now all of a sudden I have 14 Rocks, 3 Brocks, 11 Undertakers, 5 Cenas, etc.

Keep the more sought figures and the old ones.
And the first in the lines.

Like someone mentioned, just put all the least valuable and common basics in a storage crate, then leave it in your garage. Don't forget to install a security system in case Dean F'n Ambrose is lurking nearby.
It's good to keep certain figures for parts in case you want to do part swaps later on. I almost got rid of the first basic Brock and now I plan on changing the head to the RSC exclusive Brock.
