Andrew Garfield. I thought Tobey McGuire was great and that Garfield would be a terrible replacement but I was wrong. Not only did I enjoy Garfield's performance so much better, it actually made me end up hating Tobey McGuire as Spider-Man. Same here although I still enjoy all Maguire/Raimi Spider-Man trilogies. I feel that Garfield's version of the Web Slinger is more true to the comics. Besides, Tobey kinda lacked the comedic personality of Spider-Man.

I like Toby as Spiderman better, But Garfield's movie was better .... I thought that Sam Rami's direction was a little campy the film looked very colourful and sterile. I thought Marc Web's film was better for my taste.

Tobey Maguire is true embodiment of "Spider-man" look, he's socially awkward, no chick is trying/would try to date him, makes more sense that he's living with his grandparents, and he's a loser, which works for him with Garfield, it DOESN'T WORK how are WE, the viewers, supposed to take this version of Spiderman seriously if has women trying to "S" his "D" every which way he turns, because he's out of place in this film imo Anyone who voted for Garfield clearly doesn't care about the Spiderman character. . an extreme and very unfair comment AF. I'm a huge mark for Spidey and I enjoyed Garfield. I enjoyed both men equally but that seems to be a very unpopular opinion.

Roman Bellic really summed it up perfectly.

If I had to choose, I'd go Garfield. Party due to the overall style on the spidey-verse he is in but I did think he was awesome as spidey in the suit. I agree that at time he was a bit odd as Peter but so was Toby, and being able to look back and compare I would choose Garfield. Toby did good though.

But to suggest that anybody who enjoyed Garfield doesn't care about the Spider Man character is unfair IMO.

Topher Grace should've been cast as Peter Parker. He probably would've been good. Not with the blonde short hair he had in the third one though, then he'd look like a flat out wanna be.

TM for me. Garfield wasn't bad but he seemed to go from self conscious to cocky as ![](http://www.wrestlingfigs.com/images/wfcensored.gif) in no time which I think put me off. Where as Tobey made the change seem more gradual and even had a glimmer of self consciousness after he built a confidence in himself as spiderman.

There is no "by far" when it comes to the comparison. Overall, Maguire's Parker mirrors the Silver Age/Classic Spider-man that has become an icon. His Parker is awkward, disorganized, intelligent, and brave. Garfield's Spidey, due largely to the script, was more self-assured, somewhat arrogant, occasionally reckless, but willing to sacrifice himself for others. ASM was more of an Ultimate/alternate universe Spidey.
Garfield is the physically superior of the two in terms of movement and body language. He was more sudden in his movements, and more arachnid-like in his attacks. They both have their strengths, but Maquire has a slight edge because he's better at conveying emotion.
Lastly, and I know this is a weird nitpick, but how does Garfield get that massive hair helmet into his mask? The guy has more hair than head.

Question is... who was the better Spider Man, not which storyline you preferred. Cause truth be told both had pros & cons.
That being said I think Garfield is a much better actor than Toby Maguire. Plus, he's more slender like Spider Man. His movements remind me more of how Spider Man moves in the comics & cartoons.
I can not wait till ASM2 comes out.

I completely agree with this and it really comes down to how you view the character. If you like Slott or Bendis style then I think Garfield fills that character perfectly. Tobey is definitely more Ditko and Lee. A character like Spider-man has both the advantage, and disadvantage, of having so many writers and artists interpret the character. So each fan wants to see something different. That's what keeps the internet in business haha.

So each fan wants to see something different. That's what keeps the internet in business haha. It seems to me that many of the non-comic fans of Spidey were expecting, consciously or subconsciously, a re-hash of the Ditko-Lee Spidey. All of the popular cartoons (Spidey '67, Spider and his Amazing Friends, and Spidey:TAS) were different takes on the Silver Age origin and personality. Parker has not only gone through personality developments in the 616 continuity, but the Spider-man character has had multiple books in various time periods, alternate universes, stand-alone stories, and other identities than Parker. ASM proved that there is still a market for Spidey adaptations, even if they don't draw directly from Spidey's original continuity.
