I was watching the 1992 Royal Rumble on the soon to be defunct Classics on Demand and when Savage comes in and takes out Jake "The Snake" Roberts, he does his thing where he jumps over the top rope to the floor to attack him. Monsoon and Heenan seemed to be caught off guard and thought he was eliminated, and Heenan quickly recovered it by explaining that you had to get tossed out, that you can't eliminate yourself. Now I'm not going to get into a whole thing about the "rules" of the Royal Rumble or whatnot. My actual question is, was Savage so caught up in the moment that he just did that on instinct because that's what he always did? It could have been planned, but the way the announcers played it off, it seemed like Savage did it by accident. What are your thoughts?

I think Savage messed up and jumped over, because years later guys would jump over the rope and they would be eliminated. So I think Savage was just so caught up in it, he didn't think and just jumped over the top rope to get at (as Lord Alfred would say) "Snake Roberts".

Savage was said to be an overplanner by everyone who worked with him....tough to see him screwing up......Id say this was rehearsed ad nauseum as per his rep.

He did seem to jump quite obviously over the top rope, and he was a big planner. I think maybe he thought if you jump out then your still in it or just thought to would look good or something. Maybe that's why they introduced the rule of eliminating yourself

Then earlier in the match Boss Man eliminates himself, technically. He dove at Flair and Flair moved and Boss Man went over the top. Flair didn't throw Boss Man out but he was still eliminated.

I was watching this last night with fellow WFigs Members JDP and Arrow, and we were all really confused when that happened. I didn't understand why he was still in.

I guess you'd differentiate by intent, boss man went to eliminate someone and wa eliminated himself as flair moved, flairs actions (didn't touch him) but led to him going over the top rope. Savage jut jumped over the top rope on his own free will with no one around him. Only thing you can go on really, I do wonder if savage was even aware of what it meant to jump over th top rope, he seemed to do it quite slow and obvious too.

Eliminated himself in the 91 Rumble too. Terrible Rumble Performer considering he didn't make it out there in 91, did this in 92, and tried to pin Yoko in 93.
Just kidding obviously, but it was probably just scripted for him to do it and not be eliminated. Just like it was scripted for Andre to eliminate himself in 89. Of course, he could have just messed up. Who knows.

it might've been a mistake. one of macho's favorite spots was to jump over the top rope and take it to someone outside the ring. he might've just been going on autopilot and not realized what he did.

yeah, I'm going with the whole caught up in the moment thing. The pinfall one in 93 was just plain stupid.
