So in Stone Cold's latest podcast with William Regal he asked Regal what he thinks of Steamboat vs. Savage from Wrestlemania 3. Regal goes on to say that he loved the match until he talked to Steamboat about it. Austin seemed to know exactly what he was talking about and felt the same way. Austin said the match is a huge hit with wrestling fans but they seem to have some sort of insider information that apparently changed how they feel about the match. Does anybody have any clue what they are talking about?

I havent heard anything about it but I would venture to guess it has something to do with how Savage literally map every tiny little thing out about it. Most people consider going out there and "winging it" and having a great match to be better then pre planning every spot & move.

Savage & Steamboat practiced every spot beforehand.
Naked.

I think it's due to the pre-planned nature of it. One of those weird wrestler things, where guys criticise Macho Man and (to a greater extent) DDP for scripting and rehearsing their matches rather than improvising in the ring even though fans will never know or care. I think that was one of the things that led to Undertaker not liking DDP when he got to the WWF. Undertaker does the same thing nowadays for his WrestleMania matches.
Personally, I find Savage-Steamboat to be the most overrated match of all time anyway.

Yeah it was the fact that Savage planned out the match move for move.

What everyone is saying is true.
Savage and Steamboat practiced that match for a long ass time. Every spot, every move, every little thing was put together and practiced.
Flair said that Savage wanted to do that with him for their WM 8 match too, and Flair couldn't believe it.

There's definitely something to being able to make it up on the spot, but I honestly don't see a problem with making it up and practicing beforehand. End of the day, what matters is how happy the fans are.

Savages absolutely mental attitude towards preparation soured many a dude on working with him because he would get pissy with guys all the time.....especially if this match coincided with a period where he was unsure of his spot/trying to impress.
Flair said his match prep stuff was mental before WM8. Also made hugely difficult by the fact that things were bad at home for Savage and Flair felt he was intruding.....made even worse by the fact Liz hated the photos angle and Savage hadn't consulted her about it.

Funny that Savage was just ahead of his time in that regard. Savage vs Steamboat has to be viewed in a vacuum imo. It was special for when it happened, and it was special because those two guys were capable of a match that most guys on the roster weren't capable of during that period. That being said, I don't think it's aged particularly well. I do think it's a great match but seeing it now for the first time, after seeing where matches are capable of going over the last 15 years, doesn't have nearly the impact. It's sort of that Brian Pillman theory. In 1991, Pillman was an amazing high flyer, but then came the WCW Cruiserweights in the mid 90's from all over the world. It doesn't make Pillman any less awesome, but there is a visible evolution on what it meant to be a high flyer in 1990 and a high flyer in 1997.

I've never creamed my shorts over that match like most on here have. Is it a decent match? Yes it is. But it's far from the masterpiece so many make it out to be.
On the subject of calling it on the fly or pre-planning and fans never knowing, that's true. But it does ruin the magic for me when it's in my face that they practiced every little thing.
And another thought, what did Savage do if their plan didn't work the crowd? Stick to it anyway?

I guess that makes sense.
Austin is big on "calling it in the ring" but it doesn't ruin the match for me at all of it was all pre-planned out.
Isn't it noted that Undertaker has planned out all of his Wrestlemania matches the past few years and practices them beforehand?
Oh well. The way Austin and Regal were talking about it had me worried Savage and Steamboat had ripped off a match that took place elsewhere or something.
