So every 5 days or so I'm gonna start a thread about obscure(and likely rubbish) gimmicks and we can berate them or defend them as we see fit........
so week one will cover Saba Simba.
I mean just what the hell was Vince thinking here?(a phrase I reckon I will use a lot) I heard someplace that Atlas was mortified to be doing it and that's why it fell so flat(that and the fact it was utter crap)The whole deal his movements in the ring etc.....just DIRE. Here's his debut.....
so lets hear it for Saba Simba.......LOL.

All I can think of is imagine if they tried that today? Man the crap storm that would come down on their head would be gigantic.

All I know is....I want a Saba Simba Figure LMFAO!!! If I wanted any Tony Atlas figure it would be in his Mr U.S.A. gimmick. Interestingly Tony seems to hold Saba Simba in high regard because he was virtually homeless when Vince rang him to take up the gimmick. He reckons it saved his life.

Was this Vince thinking he could replicate The Lion King in a wrestling ring? Garbage gimmick but at least it gave Atlas a paycheck.

There have been worse gimmicks. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing though.

It's not like too many people even knew who Atlas was. Now I read, I'm trying for the life of me to find it, Atlas was very grateful to McMahon for bringing him back and giving him a gimmick. He made some money off of it. I think it was around this time when Atlas was pretty much homeless and living on a park bench. And that was even after winning some indy promotions world title! Here's your next guy.

Walking around, looks like some bird's real cold they way he's walking around, all them feathers.Who's he trying to fool?!"

I never noticed this till now... Wonder if all tribesmen have the exact shield or if Vinnie believes in recycling?

Can anyone recall how long Atlas performed with that gimmick. It seems like his stint as Saba Simba was relatively short. Kind of like Steamboats "Dragon" return.......and subsequent requested release.

I was actually thinking Kamala as soon as he walked out. I thought it was a more vague connection in my head, but now I know.

Did he get any wins over legit superstars as Saba Simba? I remember him beating jobbers and losing to the Barbarian.

Man, what a terrible gimmick. At least it put Tony back in the spotlight for a short while. Terrible gimmick or not, he was wrestling for the WWF and I'm sure earned WAY more than any of us on this forum.
