Man, what a terrible gimmick. At least it put Tony back in the spotlight for a short while. Terrible gimmick or not, he was wrestling for the WWF and I'm sure earned WAY more than any of us on this forum. That's not really fair. I'm a stay-at-home dad; he could've picked up a penny in the parking lot and made more than me.

I wonder if Vince was stabbing Piper in the leg with a pen after he blew Atlas cover on commentary. (Ssssssshutup Roddy)

Looked like he could have been in the Lion King on Broadway. lol
If I wanted a Tony Atlas figure (which I do) it would be a 2-Pack with Rocky Johnson as WWF tag team Champions. Atlas in blue trunks and Johnson in red.

Those comments from Piper reminded me of when Steve Austin did something similar in 96. While doing guest commentary with Vince,King,JR , he made the following comment (or words to the affect) during the Raw debut of The Stalker.........."What the hell is Barry Windham doing out here with camo all over his face?!"
Vince: "Well thats the Stalker Mr Austin..." Austin: "Thats Barry Windham Vince"......
It didnt go much further than that i dont believe, but it was funny as hell then. I mean Austin was just saying what ,i think, most of us were thinking at the time.

Can anyone recall how long Atlas performed with that gimmick. It seems like his stint as Saba Simba was relatively short. Kind of like Steamboats "Dragon" return.......and subsequent requested release. Tony Atlas as Saba Simba debuted on the September 15th, 1990 edition of Superstars and his last televised appearance was at the 1991 Royal Rumble.

I wonder if Vince was stabbing Piper in the leg with a pen after he blew Atlas cover on commentary. (Ssssssshutup Roddy) Piper seemed to go off on his own with commentary for awhile after he first started. watch SummerSlam 90 where he disparages the Ultimate Warrior, the current face WWF Champion, over everything from his wrestling style to missing moves to his attire while playing up Rick Rude's strengths.
