Im watching Vengeance 2001 and its on The Hardys match.
I know the storyline reason (Jeff jumping off the cage instead of climbing out to win the titles). It makes sense storyline wise. Partner 1 gets mad at partner 2 for costing matches.
But from a booking standpoint, why break them up?
They got back together a month or 2 later. To make it worse, they didnt even mention their split up.
What was the point of breaking them up if theyre going to get back together a month later?

I agree is was really pointless but maybe an experiment at the time just to see how each one with go as single wrestlers.

I think they were testing the waters to see how it would go over if Matt was a heel, and they had a singles run.
I remember they showed up at the Royal Rumble too, and went after Taker, and then after that didn't show back up until No Way Out 2002 ppv.
Definitely weird times there for the Hardys. It's really like the WWE had no idea what to do with them then.

WWF was SO crowded in 2001/2002. up until the brand split there was heaps of talent just treading water.....The Hardys fell into this category.

I will say this...
Matt Hardy's heel turn in 2003 when he became Matt Hardy Version 1 was fantastic. Matt Hardy was actually my favorite wrestler in the company for some time.
It's actually kinda sad to look back see the downfall of the Hardys,

On a RAW in 2002, he attacked Jeff and showed up that "thursday" on Smackdown as V1

They were being punished for something, but I can't remember what it was. I'm sure their book and shoot interviews mention it.

It was around the start of the downfall of the tag division IMO. Edge and Christian breaking up earlier in the year made sense but this seemed forced. Neither brother was ready to venture off on their own. A few months later and almost every tag team was broken up in the draft. Its still a great mystery to me as to why the WWE felt the need to break up all of their great tag teams in '01/02.

I remember Matt broke up with Lita at that point to, they had the match at vengeance then nothing until they came back in 2002 Royal Rumble after Taker had taken them out on raw or SD (can't remember but something happened). In my opinion, matt going heel was supposed to be like Edge going face. Edge was doing great and I think they wanted Matt to be the same way whilst letting Jeff fall under the radar. Jeff was always popular so WWE thought they wouldn't have to do much with him but matt was the one that needed that little bit of help. Dropping Lita would put her back in the women's title picture so when you think about it that way it could have worked out well.
Then they cone back together, same routine for a few months and finally the Matt push happens. Unfortunately Lita got injured and Jeff was messed up, but Matt showed as V1 he could make it on his own and run with what they gave him. We didnt really see anything else from him bar the Edge fued which was dissapointing. I always preferred Matt.
