This thread right now... Seriously though, this person must have had an underlying mental problem and it just let loose.

I was talking about violent crime. That was the whole point of the discussion. Ugh, I hate the whole "it's my opinion" cop out. If you don't want to talk about "your opinion" then don't post. Don't be shocked when people challenge "your opinion." I know the death penalty is the same as an eye for an eye. And it doesn't work. It's barbaric, cruel, not a deterrent, expensive and unnecessary. What makes you think the death penalty will work wherever you live? That's the rule of an opinion, I can post it anywhere I damn well want. You can't say it won't work in my country over here in England. You don't live here. Our country has a system where criminals are scared of by law enforcement and ongoing operations and ways to deter criminals are in small numbers. When we had capital punishment/death penalty, it reduced numbers. It will also add greater protection to the public as especially here, we need something like that for our ongoing terrorism issues, murder etc. Talk to another UK member. You may have a rational discussion any more on this forum can you? Did I say you can't post your opinion? No. I said using it as an excuse is ridiculous. Your opinions will be challenged. You can't stop them from being challenged by shouting "It's my opinion." So I can't say it won't work for you but you guys can say it works here and you can talk about how bad guns are and how the US should outlaw them? If criminals are afraid of law enforcement then there wouldn't be any crime.

Rehabilitation can't bring back murdered family members. And killing the murderer can bring them back?

I was taught in school years ago about capital punishment in America being a good thing and how it has helped deter crime.

States with the death penalty have, on average, a higher murder rate than those without it.

We've been told that and we just had a documentary on a channel called BBC 3 which showed a whole season of documentaries about death penalty in the US.

I'd also want to add it punishes the wrongfully accused to a point where they can't get justice (things like DNA testing have proven quite a few were wrongfully sentenced to death), but it also punishes the family members of the criminal. It also undermines the entire idea of the justice system, since the point is that rehabilitation is possible. If it weren't, everyone who committed any sort of crime might as well be killed off. Not only would crime be lower, but it'd also solve my issue with trying to find a decent parking space. Rehabilitation can't bring back murdered family members. Why keep them locked up for years and years when they can be put out of misery as most are sadistic individuals with problems of their own kind. Neither can the death penalty. I wasn't talking about the victim's family, I was talking about the murderer's family. They will still love him and he has the possibility of repenting. I'm not saying their actions can be excused, but why should their families suffer? Vengeance is not justice. If you want vengeance, that's understandable, but don't mask it as justice. You're not Batman. (Just so we're clear, the Batman comment wasn't meant to be condescending towards you; it's just that as a comic nerd, I couldn't pass up the opportunity.)
