So the WWE has obviously decided that Rob Van Dam has enough gas left to bring back into the fold. Can we agree on that?
With that out of the way, how is this run going to be valuable for anybody involved when the writing/booking for him has been god awful? I mean there was no hype for his return, he simply came back and beat Damien Sandow? What does that accomplish?
Part of the problem with his return was that they didn't write him out last year with any kind of angle that would have some steam upon his return. He simply disappeared. This is just pure laziness, you have one of the most popular superstars of the late 90's -00's and you can't book a feud that we can invest in when he comes back? Taking him out could have been huge for a heels push and led to a great summer rivalry. I just don't see very meticulous booking anymore, everything is done hastily and is quite piss poor imo.
My other big issue is how many times he's lost in the last 2 runs with WWE. Am i the only one who thinks superstars losing on TV should be a helluva lot scarcer? I mean beating Rob Van Dam doesn't mean much right now, he's already lost to Alberto Del Rio on July 26th 2013 in a few seconds for gods sake. That was only a few weeks after his return too, WOW!
Isn't there alot more value in bringing a guy like this back and building him again over a period of time before having your young talent defeat him? Wouldn't it be of more value to have a guy like Cesaro beat a Rob Van Dam that still looks strong? As strong as we remember him. Does it really do anybody any good to beat what is booked to look like a talent who is pretty much a has been?
If someone else has a different viewpoint i would love to hear it, honestly. I'm just at a loss for how any of this will lead to anything special.
Special being the key word because i still think Rob Van Dam has a few more great matches in him, i just don't see him getting the pitch he can hit out of the park.

Turn him heel. Pair him with Heyman. Have him be a credible challenger to Bryan's title. They would put on clinics.

Van Dam is basically a nostalgia act. He's like a Jericho, but at a bit of a lower level. It doesn't matter that much how often he loses. There's no point giving him the megapush when he's only around for a couple of months at a time, really. WWE books the entire midcard in that even-steven way where wins and losses don't matter. In a perfect world, Van Dam could come in and look strong for a month or two and then be destroyed by a Cesaro or Sandow in a real feud, sure. But WWE doesn't operate that way in the midcard. Midcard wrestling is all filler, no killer. Hopefully Bad News Barrett changes that.

Turn him heel. Pair him with Heyman. Have him be a credible challenger to Bryan's title. They would put on clinics. This would have probably been the most interesting way to go. His character has been pretty boring for years. Cocky 2001 RVD was epic, i would have loved this. |

He didn't come back to win the title, that's probably the last thing he wants right now, is to have the belt and need to do all the media.
I think he came back for the paycheck and because he still enjoys wrestling, and there's nothing wrong with that. Rob's never been the kind of guy (outside the ring) who gives a sh*t if he loses or not.

Jack Swagger's World title reign was longer than RVD held the WWE and ECW belts. Wade Barrett beat John Cena and made him his slave for a month or two. But that doesn't stop someone from falling back into the midcard shuffle. Hell, even Sheamus, a guy that WWE thinks very highly of and who will still be around in four months, hasn't had anything going on in forever. |

As many can guess I'm a big RVD fan, however at this stage of the game (as stated) if hes only going to be around 3-4 months at a time, what are you expecting they do with him? Anything he does will be stop and go everytime for storyline purposes. I think he'd have a great match with Daniel Bryan, I think MITB would be a good time for that, with Bryan going over. Im satisfied with what theyre doing with him. He still puts on great matches, is highly entertaining and puts over newer talent like Cesaro. I'm fine with what he's doing.

Let him job to Barrett for the IC title where he claims he wants HIS belt back and Barrett can play the "bad news" up that RVD is old and washed up. Let Van Dam get a few victories over some people then go for him. Or have Barrett do the open challenge and then RVD comes out and rolls him up.

It's a win for all of us cause we still get to see him wrestle. I think we were pretty lucky to see that RVD/Jericho match. I understand what you mean though.

it might seem odd, but his win-loss record on tv and ppv is ok...
this year he's 5-2 with the losses against Bad News Barrett and the triple threat.
his run last year he was 18-9
with losses to the Shield, Randy Orton, Del Rio and Christan
he was also in 3 title matches, the money in the bank, and won a battle royale.

He's basically there to put people over and get paid doing it. I don't think he minds. He's getting older and even though he's still better than a lot of people, you can tell that he's not quite as into it as he once was.

Those would all be great to see, especially Jericho just for the promos alone..... Yeah, how could I forget Cena too. Since Bray defeated him, it's about that time for Cena to become number-one contender for the world title again.  |
