Completely irrelevant. I'm guessing you weren't watching at the time. In that era of wrestling, not everyone got the belt straight away -- plenty of top wrestlers didn't get it at all. Undertaker was nothing like the Ringmaster. Well Taker and Hogan are certainly the only two guys I can think of that won the belt relatively quickly back then. And Hogan wasn't even on his first tenure in the company. Yeah... "It took him a year to win the belt = he wasn't successful at first" is not an apt analogy for that time period at all. Undertaker's rise to the title was pretty meteoric by those standards.

I mean for the longest time when I was younger I thought Taker won the belt a lot sooner. I was almost shocked when I realized it took a full year. But then looking at the other names from that time and how long it took everyone other than Hogan, Taker and Flair to win the title it really puts it into perspective. Taker was still being viewed as a rookie when he pinned Hogan. Now a days a guy can debut and 2 months later be working for the title. I'm talking guys like Sheamus who is benefiting hugely from being in the mid card IMO.

A LOT of attitude era fans were not wrestling fans before that. They enjoyed extreme violence, sexual innuendos, partial nudity, etc. That does not go on nowadays. Characters, technical matches, etc. is more of what you are seeing. Thus, the things that attracted attitude era fan are not in WWE anymore. They dont watch now. They just hate that the attitude era is gone. They are much like the hardcore ECW fan.

I wasn't really an attitude era guy because I was watching WCW in the 90's until Vince purchased it. I didn't like most of the attitude era gimmicks. I was an 80's guy more than attitude. And I do enjoy more of today's product than I have in years. Sandow easily could have fit in with the 80's - early 90's roster, but the Adam Rose gimmick is just plain stupid. I don't think it would have worked in any era.

They just hate that the attitude era is gone. They are much like the hardcore ECW fan. When I look at people I met outside of here and when a wrestling discussion comes up, I can tell most of them became fans because of the Attitude Era. They have became so sensitized that wrestling is all about hardcore action, nudity, and short matches. Most of them are not fans of today's WWE because they are led to believe that the Attitude Era IS wrestling. When most old-school fans prefer workrate over two minute matches. I wasn't really an attitude era guy because I was watching WCW in the 90's until Vince purchased it. I didn't like most of the attitude era gimmicks. I was an 80's guy more than attitude. I don't think it would have worked in any era. I agree with your assessment of Damian Sandow. His gimmick would have fared well during the '80's. Hell, you can easily have a heel tag team with him and The Genius. As for Adam Rose, I woefully disagree. His character would have fared well in the Attitude Era. They could have easily touched upon more mature topics like sex and drugs. Right now, Ray Leppan is doing his best to get the Adam Rose persona over with the parameters set in the PG Era. What we see on NXT is a small sample of what the WWE is going to be like the day Vince McMahon is no longer the man in charge. People may nag on Triple H but he has rejuvenated the developmental system. One of the most refreshing things I see on NXT is how serious they treat the women's division. I'll have a more detailed response about NXT in the NXT thread soon.

Like I said I wasn't a fan of alot the Attitude era. Gimmicks like Rikishi and the Godfather/ho's were just not things I wanted to watch. It wasn't entertaining to me. And I would put Rose in with them. I feel like I've lost brain cells after watching his entrance/exit and interviews. (From what ai have seen from him I don't have any issue with his ring work) I guess he could fit in with them, but like I said those were gimmicks that I didn't find entertaining. I guess he is better than them in the sense that I can watch his match.

It had a different form of entertainment than what we see today, what we saw in The New Generation or the 80s. All of it is different. I can nitpick something from every era and I can tell you how awesome stuff is from every era. I want to be entertained. Not everyone is going to put on a 5 star match and thats ok. And not everyone is gonna be stellar on a mic. Thats ok too. And not everyone can go in that ring and for 60 minutes put on a athletic showcase. And thats ok too.

I agree there's stuff I liked and didn't like from all era's but those two from the Attitude era I just didn't find entertaining. Even with Rose now. Like I said I really have no issues with his matches from the limited ones I watched. (and I will say his music is "fun" sounding) but I find the dancing entrance/exit, party bus and his interviews pretty mind numbing. Basically it remind me of Russel Band(?) I think that's his name. He was in forgetting Sarah Marshal, Get Him to the Roxy, Rock of Ages to name a few and I just don't care for him and that is what he reminds me of.

I think Russell Brand is basically what they are going for with Rose. That being said I was a fan of the guy as Leo Kruger which was a VASTLY different gimmick

I think there are just a lot of people on here who grew up with the Attitude Era, so it holds a special place to them. Wrestling has always been PG, and largely something that kids watch and eventually grow out of. I would have had a hard time letting my kid watch Raw back then, and there has been times when I have had to FF on the Network because of the content.
I don't think the current product is great. There are some good workers. I haven't watched wrestling religiously in a decade, but started watching weekly when my kid did. I generally paid attention between RR and WM and followed on the Internet. My kid watched for a while, but basically lost interest also.
I can see where people who grew up in the Attitude era hate this current product. I always say those that were born around 1980 or so had it best. They were a kid and can remember Hulkamania. They weren't old enough to grow tired of it like many did eventually. They also were 16-17 when the Attitude era began. It was great for us because at that age every boob makes you hard, childish jokes and cursing are great, etc. You eventually mature and grow tired of this too, and realize it is inappropriate for kids and that product isn't substainable.
I just think like others have said, wrestling eventually loses its charm. Other things are more important and entertaining. The guys you grew up with are gone. Some will watch forever, but most do not. That is why it has to target kids. My kid is only 8. He watched for a little bit, I still buy figs for him, but he doesn't care. and I am back watching from RR to Mania and that is it.

The Attitude Era was overrated as shit. There's a reason most of the fans then arent around anymore, its cause they werent fans before. They were bandwagon fans. They only watched cause it was "the cool thing to do".....My only complaint with wrestling now days is they way they book things. None of their storylines are just entertaining anymore.

I'm 18 years old and the thing I watch the most on the network is Legends House followed closely by Legends of Wrestling. The only reason I see that kids grow out of wrestling is immaturity. I don't know how many times I've heard wrestlings gay, why are they in their underwear, isn't it all just fake, why would you watch something that's not real? These questions/statements all show immaturity IMO. Would you ask someone why they would watch a soap opera because its not even real? Hell no. And I'm sorry but any male that can't overlook a guy in trunks is clearly immature or has something to hide, why are you paying attention to his trunks rather than the entertainment? Is a better question. But guess what you slap a broad on the screen with a decent rack and those same people can't look away. You watch an interview segment and someone says something edgy and calls someone a bitch and those same people react "Woahhhh oh crap". So who's really the one that needs go grow up?
I watch wrestling for the same reason women watch soap operas, children watch spongebob and males generally watch legit sports.
Entertainment.
Its an escape. Thats why I can watch any era from the 70s on. Because I don't care that its not fake, I don't care its in color, I don't care they have catchy music, I don't even care if I see another mans ass for a second or two ( which happened left and right in the attitude era) if it entertains me, I watch it. I'm not going to watch something I don't find entertaining and then go bitch about it.
Do I hate the booking sometimes? Yes, who doesn't? Anyone that's ever read a book, watched A shoot, watched a doc. , etc knows that the wrestlers themselves have issues with bookings that don't even involve them so I can be mad too.
But I'm not going to say I want this era, I want that era because it is a NEW era. Time goes on and everything else goes with it. Why can't people just be used to that by now.

So, that grinds your gears hey? Well, you know ? The fact that some people can't seem to enjoy today's product, because we can't go back to yesterday's. And, If some people think that the Attitude Era will ever come back, then ! Thank you very much! #BNB

Attitude ERA will always be the best, hence why years later people still talk about it. I know a lot of wrestling fans that have quit since 02 and more left after 06.

People still talk about every era. Ruthless Aggression was awesome. You must love PG and John Cena since you talk about them so much.

While it's undeniable that WWE has lost some of its relevance from 12-15 years ago, even Vince has acknowledged that the nature of pro wrestling includes an ever-shifting fan base. As with any form of entertainment that has unending installments, a portion of fans are going to form a strong attachment to a certain era and subsequently balk when change comes along.

It does look like underwear and I've heard countless wrestlers say that it takes a long time to get used to being in front of huge crowds "basically wearing underwear". If other fans want to call me "gay" for wishing that guys would cover up a little more (which seems in the spirit of the oxymoron), I can deal with that.
