This has to be one of the things that grinds my gears the most about some wrestling fans. You generally find this lot in the comments sections of Youtube and Facebook. You know, the jaded types who seemingly simply cannot have fun since stepping out of their childhood that complain about a new gimmick such as Adam Rose because it's not "serious" and will go on to whine about "PG" being an issue and making biased & unfair comparisons to the Attitude Era and how WWE has become a joke etc. But yet I'm sure they absolutely love equally over the top caricature gimmicks like Godfather or The Oddities.
Do you ever get the feeling that some of these people would have a different opinion on someone like Adam Rose if he had debuted in 1998 during their childhood? A lot of these fans seem to look back on stuff from their childhood and think everything was great and so much better because they weren't exposed to the internet and were really too young to be critical like they are now.
What is your take on these kind of fans? Do you have any stories about some funny/ridiculous comments you've encountered on YouTube?

I guess I can see where they are coming from. The booking isnt nearly as in depth as far as storylines and what not as they used to be. Usually there was a few storylines going on and they were in depth as to now there is about two in depth but like three or four going on.
It isn't the same as it used to be and some just dont want to let go of the past. I dont mind this era, the booking could be better and what not.
I laugh at some of the comments though.

"what ever happened to champions like Stone Cold or the rock?"
Exactly what I hear and it's ridiculous.

It can be annoying. That viet guy is stuck in the Attitude Era.
I loved the Attitude Era, it was amazing to be a part of that and the Monday Night Wars as they happened live. However, going back and watching the PPVs during that era is a bit of a letdown. Regardless, I'm okay with wrestling evolving and changing.

I think Adam Rose is a guy with a gimmick that really could benefit by going more of a PG-13 route. He could take his rave club character from less innuendo to more literal displays and promos. I think him openly talking about sex and drugs, versus alluding to them, would really help.
That being said, the Attitude Era is the exception, not the rule. WWE isn't going back to that form of crash TV, Jerry Springer, content. It was the right time, the right place, with the right group of talent and writers. The WWE will always be more Hulk Hogan and John Cena than they will ever be Stone Cold Steve Austin.
To be fair, the Attitude Era was amazing imo. Everyone top to bottom had something going on, new stars boomed, and WWE truly pushed themselves every single week, primarily because they had to. I hate when people try to undersell the Attitude Era but I'm not a fan that pines to see it back either. I just miss the storytelling element of it. No matter how stupid, over the top, or meaningless a story may have been, at least there was a story being told. We don't get that in todays product and I think a portion of the audience has lost interest because of it. I'll never understand the purely "random match" crew. If a match doesn't have a story built around it or meaning, it rarely keeps my interest. That to me was the difference between the Attitude Era and now.
Also, to be fair, we are in a strange time where the top guy isn't liked by a decent size portion of the audience. Cena appeals to a particular demographic, for the most part, and guys like Punk and now Bryan are expected to appeal to the other side of that demographic. So that "Stone Cold Steve Austin or The Rock" type of comment is going to continue until a guy comes along that has that mass appeal and really sticks, which I don't know if that's even possible with today's wrestling fan.

I love the attitude era, but it's over - time to move on. The thing that I wish they still tried to emulate or continue is what some of you have alrady suggested: every superstar from the opening act to the main event had a storyline going on. Nowadays it's just the Champion, Cena and maybe 2 other stories. Also, I don't understand all the hate of the product being PG. I prefer it not be PG myself but when I 1st got into wrestling I loved Bret Hart to this day he's still one of my favorites, he's a PG type character. Alot of people loved wrestling in the 80's when Hulkamania was running wild, that was a PG era.

Whether you like it or not, it was the best time ever to be a wrestling fan, and most have awesome memories of that era. Everyone watched wrestling, the crowds were nuts, it was just awesome. Right now Raw does around a 3.2 rating every week. Back then, Raw was doing a 5.5 every week, and Nitro airing at the same time was doing a 5. That is absurd.
The work rate is much better now than it was during the AE. However, the story lines, build ups and use of talent is much much worse.

The only problem I have with todays product is the lack of unpredictability, everything is so predicable and it seems every Raw just goes through the motions and follows the same script. The one thing the AE had was the live environment feel, you never knew what was going to happen, its almost like they went with stuff on the fly and they tried to top it every week. And its a shame because I think the quality of talent they have today for the most part is head and shoulders above most of the AE roster.....

It's just people that don't like wrestling anymore trying to convince themselves that if it went back to how it was in their childhood, they'd enjoy it again. They don't realise that their own tastes have changed. That's why people just come up with BS excuses for what would make wrestling "good" again: Bring back The Rock, bring back Brock Lesnar, hire guys from the indies, push CM Punk, push Daniel Bryan, have longer matches, let wrestlers bleed, stop being PG, do four PPVs a year, etc etc. Most of these things have happened, and the same people still cry the same amount, and they'd still cry the same amount if the rest of those things happened too. It's because these people have grown out of wrestling without realising it, or because they've got too ingrained in the "everything sucks" culture.

When I was going to school, everyone always complained about how this movie sucked, or this game sucked etc. I generally enjoy every movie and game I play, but whatever. Anyways Sweater basically summed it up. Still, wrestling hasn't been this good in quite a while, I think you're missing out if you aren't watching right now. The only years of WWE (that I've watched) that I thought were truly awful was 2007, 2010, and 2011. Other than that, I generally always enjoy WWE.

Personally I don't understand the hate for the current product I think it's pretty god damn amazing. I can understand the hate for 08-10 because the product but god awful but in my opinion wwe from 11-14 has been damn entertaining and I don't understand the cry for the attitude era it had it's time and that time isn't now. The time now is for great workers that put on amazing matches like Bryan punk shield Wyatt's ziggler cesaro zayn and all the fresh talent if we could get more story lines, I believe we'd be looking at one of the greatest eras ever

I think a lot of the people that complain are only watching the television shows. If you only see the Tv, then right now WWE is miserable. The storylines are paper thin and way too predictable, and most of the guys are the shits on the mic. But, the PPVs are actually usually good to great. I just wish they could improve the Tv shows and get some improved storylines. The wrestling world desperately needs a new announcer that shines, Cole is intolerable most of the time.

Youtube and Facebook "fans" of almost anything are the ing worst. I've gotten into tons of arguments with so many of them over the years, and you're definitely right. None of them have any sort of reasons, let alone logical ones, as to how a "PG" rating affects the product in negative ways. Worst of the lot are the fans who weren't even old enough to be watching the Attitude Era when it was all happening; yet they can go on for days about how it was so much better because it wasn't "PG". ing ridiculous.

I started watching wrestling in the late 80s and didn't find it bad until after the Ruthless Aggression Era. It just keeps getting worse. I'm 30 years old and have enjoyed plenty of gimmicks since I've been an adult. Adam Rose is not one of them as well as many others. 75% of wrestlers these days just don't belong in the business IMO. They just don't have that special it factor. I think fans today are just looking for the next thing to come along so they can cheer and act like this guy or that guy is so great but the hype dies and they move along to the next guy. Take Fandango for example. He is a prime example of Adam Rose's future. I'd even put Bray and maybe Dbry in the same category. Years later, we"re all still looking back at guys like Warrior, Austin, Undertaker, Rock, Hogan, Savage, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, etc.. Larger than life superstars.
Tell me, what wrestler today is going to leave a mark in wrestling history like guys from the past eras? Cena will but he is a RA era guy so.. Who after him? Ziggler (billy gunn ripoff) he had his chance and couldn't cut it, Adam Rose (Russell Brand ripoff), Barrett, Big E, etc.. These guys will never be superstars. CM Punk is the only exception to this era which again, he could be considered a RA era guy. He had "it" and you couldn't miss it. The only guys I see any future with is Reigns, Rollins, possibly Bray, and that's about it.
I'll never quit watching because I love wrestling and realize where the business is at and why it's this way but I can understand why some fans hate today's product. It's just not good in comparison to what we've had in the past. Then again, it's not geared towards the same type of audience either. If you want to get a non biased opinion on what is better though, do this. Watch today's product and pay close attention to the crowd. See their reactions and the pops that each wrestler gets. Then watch an event from the attitude era and do the same thing. See which crowd is more active and excited about being there. My money say attitude era.

This current era is the possibly the best it's been, since the Ruthless Aggression Era... if not ever. Majority of the matches these young guys have been having on RAW, SmackDown, NXT and these Pay-Per-Views have been amazing.
Nostalgia wears off quickly. Especially with the Attitude Era.

I think it's more of a case that most wrestlers these days are manufactured by the WWE. Before the mid 2000s, most of the wrestlers were seasoned elsewhere and had the experience to do what was best to get themselves over. Today, you have a lot of guys that seem to be throwing something against the wall hoping it sticks. I realize a lot come from the indys, but even the indys can't compare to developing styles of the old territories, and tours of different countries.
I feel the product is changing for the better. It just takes time and I believe wrestling is always going to have it's ups and downs.
For me, today's product is too glamorous. I'm not saying that's bad at all, but that doesn't appeal to myself. I'm a little older than most that watch the product, so I understand who they are trying to appeal to. I think it's just a case of when wrestling grabbed each person, they will always favor those times.

A lot of these people grew up during the Attitude Era, so they're blinded by nostalgia. Everything enjoyable from our childhood is partially tainted by rose-colored glasses. I can go back now and watch some of the Attitude Era stuff and I cringe, but I know that I ate it up when it happened. Some of it is still great, don't get me wrong, but some of it simply doesn't hold up well over time.
2001 is the mecca of professional wrestling for me. There was never a time that I was so enthralled by the product, so completely wrapped up in every aspect of the product, etc. Nowadays, people complain for days about how the invasion was handled. Hell, I realize a lot of it was poorly done. At the time, though, it was the end-all, be-all, greatest thing going to me.

I mean the attitude era was when EVERYONE watched. So all of the "casual fans" comments your seeing are people who mainly just followed during the insane Attitude Era. I am a huge mark and grew up with the AE. And I can admit there are times where my brain tells my to be blinded by that era and not enjoy what's currently happening. But then I come to my senses. I love Adam Rose. I love Bo Dallas. I love a lot of what WWE is doing right now. Mania 30 was my favorite Mania since Wrestlemania ing 17. They are proving that they can still be a good product regardless of what their TV ratings are. Hell Raw has almost always been PG besides a few years where the entire show went tv 14. It's all about creative. We don't need cursing, sexual innuendos, dirty crap to be entertained. The only thing that I feel they should bring back (in a very light and well used manner) is blood. Blood helps tell a story. Otherwise it's all the same formula minus the explicit content.

I always say, today's product is actually very good, if you can get your head out of your ass long enough to watch. Especially the in-ring portion of the show.
