Start out easy, like a simple part switch. Such as replacing the old smiling Orton scan with his newest one. Everyone starts somewhere. Get some decent brushes, and some ACRYLIC paint. I recommend Apple Barrel. You'll also need sealer. Other good tools to have are an X-acto knife, (just about anything, chopping off hair, shaving off a tattoo or beard) sandpaper, screwdrivers, (to split torsos, read the FAQ) and hot glue. (it's not only a good binder, but a good sculpting material as I've found)
In addition to starting out simple, take your time. Rushing makes you more liable to mess up, and if you're not on time contraints, there's no real reason to rush. I find doing very small amounts of painting, like in 10-15 minute intervals over a long period of time makes for a much better looking outcome.
