I recently pulled a Sgt Slaughter and Bret Hart LJNs out of a box that had probably been in this attic for 12 years or more. Just wondering the best safest way to clean that sticky dirty crap that forms on LJNs without damaging the color of the figs Any tips would be appreciated

Is the paint chipped?

Not really. Color is good just sort of stickiness all over (and some playwear)

Just soap/water and a rag works wonder.
Soap/water and Mr. Clean magic erasers work well. Don't scrub too hard, or the eraser falls apart easily.
For paint scuffs, you can use acetone and a Q-tip... but use it sparingly and rinse the figure immediately, as acetone can eat at the rubber.

Magic erasers work well to an extent, but in my experience, they can take away the paint if you're scrubbing away a tough mark. I had a Warrior last year that looked really nice except for some light ballpoint pen marks. The magic eraser lightened them, but I realized a little too late that in doing so, I was rubbing away some of the orange from the tights.
goo-Gone is what you want if you're just trying to give them a general cleaning or remove the stickiness that seems to build on them from time to time.

I had a figure that was really sticky and had magic marker on it from my childhood, and I decided to try and throw it in the dishwasher. I expected it to kill the figure, but believe it or not it came out without any marker or stickiness and the original paint was intact!

I wouldn't risk a Sgt Slaughter or Bret Hart by throwing it in the dishwasher.
Magic Erasers are amazing on LJNs. I've cleaned nearly every figure I own with them.
I bought a lot off a local guy that were sitting in a torn garbage bag in his garage for over a decade. They were CAKED with dirt & spam. I spent a few hours and cleaned them with Magic Erasers and they were spotless once I was finished.

I'm in the same boat. Just started unpacking some old ones and was shocked to find a few with that weird stickiness to them. I'll try soap and water first.
