Recently it was reported that UFC 176 was cancelled due to an in training injury to featherweight champion and pound for pound stalwart Jose Aldo. Matchups such as a middleweight eliminator between Gegard Mousasi and Jacare Souza have been relocated to other cards. To add on top of that, challenger Chad Mendes and Aldo have provided sone smack talking recently to add to the promotional fire for the inevitable rematch. Here it is courtesy of MMAJunkie.com.
The Aldo/Mendes match was a rematch from their 2012 title fight in which Aldo won with a first round knockout. Mendes has since won four straight including stoppage wins over Clay Guida and Darren Elkins and a one sided decision over 8th ranked Nik Lentz to earn the title shot. Aldo is undefeated since 2005 and recently bested number 4 ranked Ricardo Llamas in his most recent appearance.
It was rumored that the headliner could've been salvaged with an appearances from Women's Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, fresh off a 16 second knockout of Alexis Davis, but it was revealed that she broke her hand during the fight and would require surgery. UFC President Dana White proclaimed that the next pay per view would still be numbered 177, which features a bantamweight title tilt in a rematch between new champion TJ Dillashaw and former champion Renan Barao. This is the second card that has been cancelled after the infamous UFC 151 cancellation when Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones would not take a reschedule title fight against late replacement Chael Sonnen.
So thoughts from everybody on the cancellation of UFC 176.
