Most people are brushing off the upcoming match at Summerslam (which you can get for only 9.99 on the WWE Network) between Roman and Orton and to be fair I am too. I have very little interest in seeing this match but once I started thinking about it, I realized that this match SHOULD be a big deal. Hear me out:
- Randy Orton is arguably the second biggest name that the WWE has created in the past 10 years (Bryan, Punk, and Batista can be argued as well but as far as length and consistency goes Orton is the one behind Cena).
-Roman Reigns is the guy who is obviously and forcibly being groomed to become the next big face
- Summerslam is one of the biggest PPV's of the year, and is meant for huge matchups
So shouldn't a match between one of the most established stars and one of the fastest rising stars on such a large stage be important?
Think in comparison to Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Bret Hart at Survivor Series. That match was another case where you had one of the most established guys (Hart) face the next big face (Austin) at a big PPV. That match was a big deal. There are other examples in history as well.
This thread is probably either going to turn into "this could go into the summerslam thread" or "WWE sucks now that's why" but I honestly want to hear some thoughts about this. Is it Orton's fault for being stale or watered down over the years? Is it Reigns for not being ready? Is it completely the writers' fault? Is it Cena's for becoming so big that everyone else doesn't look that special anymore?
What exactly is it about Orton vs Reigns that doesn't scream the huge matchup that it rightfully should be?

Perhaps it could even be the fact that a lot of people were expecting Triple H to fight Roman instead and think of Orton as a step down

Because of Part-timer Brock Lesnar both of them are taking a backseat. There's no other reason. That's it. Don't think about it to hard

Because Triple H was the logical choice.

I for one am pumped up to see this match, and am hoping orton wins 100%. no, I'm not a Reigns hater. I haven't been this entertainied by Randy Orton in years, and I think his current character since he beat up Reigns has been fantastic. This is the Orton I'm a huge fan of, this crazy, lunatic "Viper" Randy orton. I think his work has just been phenomenal lately and he still isn't getting the credit he deserves. Obviously Reigns will win, but I can't help but vote for Orton.

Randy Orton isn't the most dynamic, interesting personality on the show. He was kind of buried by his title reign, which was really all about pushing a Daniel Bryan vs Triple H feud and a Big Show vs Triple H feud. Orton was basically to Bryan-HHH what The Miz was in The Rock-John Cena story. That, plus his dull going-through-the-motions performances, kind of killed any interest in him.
And that's still being felt today, because this SummerSlam match is total placeholder until Reigns vs Triple H kicks in for the next PPVs, and I think people can see through that. It comes off as forced and false. Orton has been putting in some more interesting performances the last few weeks, but too little too late.

I really think it's not even close to the climax of this feud. That's why it hasn't been heavily featured. It's really still in its build-up and I really think the WWE might prolong this story-line up to the Royal Rumble. This is Reign's test run to see if he's ready for the main-event.

Because people hate Randy and are starting to really hate Roman. So even if they put on a 5 star match, they'll still complain about how awful they are.

I think it's cause there's already been a few Reigns vs Orton matches on Raw, and reports from house shows saying that the matches between the two sucked.

Reigns's shtick is getting old fast. He needed the other two in Shield to set everyone up for him.

Probably because every other match on the card is more intriguing. As much as I like Orton and Reigns their match is probably the weakest on the card. Most likely because it really doesnt make much sense.
Why did Reigns come out and attack Orton after he was named #1 Contender anyways? Shouldn't Reigns be going after the man in charge Triple H? Seemed random. Plus Ambrose/Rollins are already doing the "you're not likely to be champion till you get your enemy out of the picture" story and doing it miles and miles better than Reigns/Orton ever could.
Reigns should have been taking on Triple H, end of story. There really isnt a better time to be pulling the trigger on that feud unless they're saving it to resurrect Survivor Series a little.
But I'm more interested in
- Bray/Jericho - Cena/Brock - Ambrose/Rollins - Paige/AJ - Swagger/Rusev
leaving Reigns/Orton almost at the bottom.
Also its not helping that Orton hasnt really won any match of note since Elimination Chamber back in Feb. Lost at Mania, Extreme Rules, Payback, MITB, and Battleground. I think Orton needs to win at Summerslam more than Reigns, also it would help the feud, otherwise its entirely predictable that Reigns is going to go over Orton easy. Orton should beat Reigns with help from Triple H setting up a future Reigns/HHH feud.

Because it made sense for Triple H to be going against Roman and Orton while still a huge name and great talent is an obvious step down from that.
The feud was Roman/Authority and then a few weeks ago it was pointlessly changed to be more so Roman/Orton instead of Roman/Authority.
To be honest I'm just dissapointed Triple H won't be working the show.
I really wish Batista could have returned in time for Summerslam giving us these three huge matches:
Lesnar vs. Cena Reigns vs. Triple H Batista vs. Orton
Don't get me wrong its not a bad card Sunday but those three matches I listed alone could sell a wrestlemania let alone A Summerslam.

Because Randy Orton has been pretty boring personality wise for a long time now. Because Roman Reigns is incredibly one note and has been lacking personality for a while now.
