Steamboat will always be NWA for me. Yes he had a good match with Savage atWM3. But the "smarter" I became as a fan will always be my cross to bear as a fan.
After reading about how Savage wanted to plan EVERYTHING in advance as opposed to calling a few things on the fly really made me not like Savage for a while. To me, the best wrestlers are the guys who improvise and do a great job at it. I've gotten over my disdain of Savage and love the guy now. But after knowing what I know now, it really dampens the impact of that WM3 match, which is regarded as one of the greatest WM matches of all time( and with good reason). But ppl didn't pay to see Steamboat and Savage. They paid to see Andre and Hogan. I believe that was the start of guys trying to steal the show at Mania.
But his series with Flair, Austin, his tag title run and matches with Vader is the Steamboat I fell in love with.
Sometimes I wish I didn't know what we all know about wrestling. I miss the days where I can get caught up in the moment as a fan as opposed to getting caught up as a critic. Sadly, those days of getting caught up in the moment are few and far between.

Steamboat was just incredible. The Flair matches speak for themselves, obviously, and he was definitely treated with more respect by the NWA. To me though, Steamboat/Savage was the start of a long tradition of the IC Champ being the real best wrestler (Hart,Hennig, HBK etc.) Those matches were consistently the best on the card, and usually you had slightly smaller guys doing more technical stuff. I give Steamboat/Savage a lot of credit for that, and stealing the show from Hulk/Andre made a hell of an impact.

Was it all over time off while Richie was being born? Then he comes back and gets jobbed out in round 1 of the WM4 world title tournament... Yeah it was man. Vince felt slighted because he had given Steamboat this massive honor/opportunity and he flung it back in his face..... Ive watched loads of shoots with guys who spoke about this and they all said this was the way Vinnie seen it. He did something similar with One Man Gang turning him into Akeem. What's the incident?

JokerFC Random thought here, not taking anything away from what an awesome tag team the Twin Towers were, but wouldn't it have made more sense especially kayfabe irony, that the team be Big Bossman a heel badguy crooked cop teaming with One Man Gang a thug rulebreaking biker/bar-room brawler...rather than a dancing, jive talking Caucasian African American???

remember Steamboat was a NWA wrestler long before his WWF days too. He and Flair were having amazing matches in the late 70s/early 80s as well.
I like to think of NWA Champ Steamboat, but there's no denying the notoriety he's had as a WWF superstar, stealing the show at WM3 and having a colouful dragon gimmick in the early 90s. I'm just happy so many generations got to see what a talented wrestler he is/was.
NWA Steamboat for me.
