26 or 28 gauge wire is better. You can get it at Michael's, Wal-Mart, and hardware stores for like 3 bucks. Just cut it with a pliers. Then, cut off smaller strips and wrap it around the bigger part to make the barbs. It's very realistic, non-expensive, and safe. But, it's very time consuming.
