Just because more people are reading comics digitally -- just as they are doing most everything digitally -- doesn't mean that comics "are a thing of the past." Nearly ask music consumption is digital, shots that mean that music is a dying art form? I'd anything, comics are bigger than they've ever been. Our at least close to the comic boom of the 90's. |

I pass this comic book shop on the way to my girlfriends house and it's always bumping on Fridays. People still love them. I dont doubt there are a handful of comic shops/news stands/bookstores every here and there but they arent as prominent as they once were. They have become like a video rental store. There might be a shop here and there but most of them are gone. |

When I was a kid I could walk into a 7-11 or a bookstore and see what new comics were available. It was through these trips I even knew what a comic book was. I like to think Comics, new comics anyway, are geared towards children. Most children have limited access to the internet, so I would think they are less likely to find comics online unless someone tells them of their existence. See comics are not like music. Music is very main stream so most of the general public knows a song exists with out having to see a record in the store. I'll never buy into digital Music, movies, or books. I like to feel what I just purchased. What really makes me laugh is when I see a digital download costs as much as an actual hard copy of something. A movie sold online for 9.99 cost the movie company nothing to keep on a server for you to download. An actual dvd sold in a store for 9.99 actually cost the movie company money to manufacture a hard copy, package, and ship. I just see it as a big con. Also, where is the fun in having a digital comic? I remember as a kid part of the fun was finding a comic in store. Then part of the fun is trying to preserve the comic book in the best condition possible. With a digital copy the fun of actually finding a comic in store is non existent. Last I'll say this, as a kid I remember my parents would say I couldnt watch tv anymore for the night. This is when I would go to my room and either play with my toys or read a comic book. I dont know how it is for children today but I would think a computer or smart phone or tablet would be just like a television in that parents dont want the kids with their faces buried in front of a screen too long. I could be wrong but an actual comic book is something you can read when your parents have limited your tv time/online time. Plus who else did this as a kid? I would take a comic or magazine and put it inside of my school book. So as we were supposed to be reading our books I would really read a comic or a magazine. Im pretty sure if a kid tried this today with a tablet or smart phone they would get in trouble/caught for sure. |

At least not in the way most people would use that phrase. That implies no one has interest in them anymore and that's not true. |

I think everyone is misinterpreting what I mean when I say comics are a thing of the past.
Im not saying the characters are no longer relevant to pop culture. Im aware that many hit movies have been made with popular comic book characters as the main characters, albeit 40 year old plus characters.
What im saying is actual comic books, hard copies, are a thing of the past. It isnt just comics, most books and magazines are becoming a thing of the past. Anyone who would tell me otherwise please explain to me, why have Walden Books, Boarders, and many other bookstores have gone out of business?
Im saying that with a lack of actual hard copies of a comic it is very hard for a new comic to be accessed by a casual reader. I still look for the Simpsons Comic, it's very hard for me to find these hard copies/paper books. Now just think for a second, the Simpsons is a main stream entity, if im struggling to find a Simpsons comic when would I find a lesser known comic?
Even if you choose to buy comics online, a digital copy, how would someone even know about a comic with out first seeing it some where?
I might be out of my element here. Maybe some of you still buy lots of comics? Like I said, I buy the Simpsons Comics and I have a difficult time finding those in stores so im basing my statements off of those experiences. Off of the fact that I have a hard time finding comics today, and yet when I was a kid I remember I would see them at a lot more locations.

The biggest example is The Walking Dead. A comic over 10 years old, now one of the top 3 television shows on air today. Maybe number 1. Game of Thrones book series turned TV series now turned Comic series. If anything, comics are once again in a Golden Age. Hell, The Death of Wolverine sold out everywhere in NorthEast Florida. Getting issues 1-4 was a tough task if you didn't have a comic pull. I just thought of this. You're telling me that Comics arent a thing of the past, and then you tell me that Xmen and Batman and Walking dead are all hits on television. You realize you just proved my point right? You yourself are telling me that these characters, which were born in comics, have moved on to a new medium. You're basically telling me that because there is a lack of interest in comics these characters have had to move on to television and movies in order to grow because there is no growth to be found in comics. |

I can go to Target right now and buy an Xmen movie dvd for less than 20 dollars. Why? Because dvd is a medium that is current thus it is more readily available and cheaper. Comics introduce us to a character. Then from there they move on to a better medium, usually a cartoon first, then a movie or tv show. |

Just because a comic can go upwards of $100 doesn't mean it's because they don't make them anymore. Important things could of happened in issues like debuts, resurrections, deaths, etc. Look at Amazing Spider-Man #300. It was the full debut of Venom (barring the little part at the end of #299) and I've seen the issue go for well over $200 and they STILL make Spider-Man comics. |

If there wasn't any interest in the characters, then you wouldn't see them on TV or in movies. Why would anyone invest billions of dollars into something that isn't selling? A better title for this thread would have been ' Is Print a Dying Medium?' Comics, magazines and to a lesser extent, newspapers will thrive in their respective digital editions. Everything is going digital. I'm sure there will come a day when everything is online; all information and all entertainment. I don't think that day is going to come as soon as a lot of people seem to think, but it is coming. One day you won't have a choice, you'll have to go digital. |
