As I get older and look back. 2002 in general was just a ing amazing and groundbreaking year for wrestling. Yeah it's probably my favorite Summerslam along with 2004. HBK/HHH is one of the greatest matches of all time. As a kid I remember CRINGING at every move michaels did thinking his back was still mangled. Ifigured he would hit a couple punches and the superkick and ride off into the sunset. What we got was absolutle HBK Magic for years to come.

Bold statement incoming.
In my honest opinion, it's not just the best SummerSlam in history. It's the best PPV in history, period.

Awesome show, but I dont know if it was the greatest SS. Is it just me, or did all the Staples Center Summerslams (2009-14) suck?

I agree on it being the best SS ever, great card, great matches, great storylines.

The crowed sucked for most of the Los Angeles SummerSlam events. While SummerSlam 2002 was a very good PPV but it doesn't rank in my time five. The WWE was going through a long transition period that started after WrestleMania X-Seven. As far as SummerSlam 2002 is concerned, I remembered somebody getting pissed at me for creating a thread that Brock Lesnar had won on a former wrestling forum I no longer post at. Additionally, who can forget pork. For those who do not know and remember, he was a member of this forum. What happened to him? I have no idea.

The crowds weren't great, but I'd HEAVILY disagree that they all sucked. 2011 and 2014 were really good and 2013 was one of the best ever, arguably. Punk/Brock, Bryan/Cena, Christian/Del Rio and that's just off the top of my head.

Im older then like 20 so no to me it wasnt. Its not even in my top 5. I was 21 years old when SummerSlam 2002 took place, so clearly people who are older than 20 do find this PPV to be the best SummerSlam event, ever.

Backstage politicking aside, he's one of the best. F*** the haters.

I've been watching since '94, and Summerslam 2002 was the first PPV I ever ordered, mainly because I was such a huge HBK fan.
I was a little underwhelmed by the Mysterio/Angle match (always thought Mysterio was overrated), but the rest of the card was spot on(Test/Taker wasn't THAT bad).
And as far as the Attitude Era PPV's go, you have to remember, the Monday Night Wars were still in full swing, so Raw would mostly be on par or better than the PPV's for the time considering ratings.

I feel HBK in the 90s was incredibly overrated. His, at times, laughable overselling and in-ring temper tantrums really don't do much for me.
However, from 2002-2010 he was one of the best workers in history.
Also, on topic, I'm 26 and still think Summerslam 2002 is easily the best one ever.

There were two very distinct versions of HBK and both were PHENOMINAL enough to get a HOF spot of their own.

HBK of the 90's would not have lost as many matches as the veteran HBK was willing to do,to get others over. though to be fair,I still think he should've beaten Cena at Mania 23 for one last run on top.

I'm with you as far as WM 23 goes. He made up for that loss in the epic WM rematch in England tho. I think his 2002 run as champ was lackluster as f***. He could've had one hell of a rivalry with RVD that could've carried over into No Way Out. Would've been badass to see HBK as champ defending the WHC in Canada against RVD. The crowd alone would've made that match insanely insane.

HBK in 1996 was like the gayest wrestler ever. But he did have some pretty wild matches. I think Mind Games 1996 was his best title defense even tho it ended so incredibly sh*tty. But to see HBK run and jump off of a chair and hit that SCM to Mankind was so incredibly badass.

One main reason people "overrate" Shawn Michaels in the 90's is because of the level of work rate he was putting into his matches. In ring, he was very consistent, put on excellent matches and just had the sex appeal. There is a reason why he was called the "Heartbreak Kid." The way people "overrate" Shawn Michaels is like how people "overrate" CM Punk's run in the Indys.
