I was just thinking about SummerSlam 2002, since I recently got a bunch of old VHS tapes, and that one was included. I opted to sell the rest, but kept SummerSlam 2002, just because I can't find a single thing wrong with it. The entire card (at least to me) seems to be just perfect. It was like every match had a main event feel to it. When the opening match is Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio, then you know the card is gonna be stacked.
So I got to thinking of other SummerSlam shows, and where 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004 all seem to have a great match here and there, they (to me) just don't come close to being as great as the 2002 edition of SummerSlam.
So anyone else feels that the 2002 one was the best as well??

91 or 98 trump 02 in my opinion. 1998 sadly doesn't hold up well all these years later, and I am not entirely sure why. It's weird, the Attitude Era was one of the hottest times for the WWE, and yet their SummerSlam and Wrestlemania events weren't anything special.

Up until 2007, the RVD match was my favorite match on the card.
The hbk match is in a league of it's own

The European title match, Oddities/Kaientai (as long as original PPV audio is in tact), the ladder match, the Tag title match, and X-Pac/Jarrett were all wildly entertaining. Austin/Taker was good for what it was and even with Austin knocked loopy it was on par with Austin PPV main events of the time. The mixed tag match sucked ass. Lions Den was a cool novelty match.

If anybody asked Steve Austin about his match with The Undertaker at SummerSlam 1998, he would tell you the match sucked. Leading into it, Austin felt him and 'Taker was going to finally have that awesome match they wanted. Sadly, after that spot where Austin got knocked out, the match felt flat. Looking back and watching SummerSlam 1998, it wasn't a good show from top-to-bottom. For 1998, it was good. For 2014, it hasn't particularly aged well. hbkbigdaddycool, a lot of PPV's from the Attitude Era have not aged well at all. Hard to fathom wre are a handful of years away from the 20th anniversary since the beginning of the Attitude Era.

2002 is clearly the best Summerslam of all time.

Yup, 2002 for sure. Mysterio vs Angle is arguably the greatest opening match of all time.

I dunno if it's the greatest ever but it would certainly be one of them. It loses points because Undertaker/Test was suuuper boring but gains a couple back because they only let it go 8 minutes. RVD/Benoit is perhaps in the top 10-15 matches that are "greatest matches that don't exist anymore because Benoit"

1000% agreed. SS 2002 is the WM17 of SummerSlams. Everything just went right that night imo. HBK vs HHH is my absolute favorite match of all time when it comes to my real life emotion as a fan. I still can't watch it to this day without getting emotional over it, it's just that special of a match to me. Taker match was the only average part of the show and the rest was great.

it;s definitely in my top 5,but I'm not sure if it's #1. I'd actually place SS 91 before it. if I had to go in order,I'd rate them:
1) SummerSlam 91 2) SummerSlam 02 3) SummerSlam 06 4) SummerSlam 92 5) SummerSlam 88

Not for me, but it is a great show. Here is my top 5 1. 1989 2. 1991 3. 2005 4. 1988 5. 2000
2002 would make it in my top 10, but not my top 5. Great show though.

If I ahd to choose a top 5 for SSlam? In chronological order it would go like this....
1)88 2)89 3)97 4)00 5)02
03 barely missed the cut. The DREADFUL ending to the EC match drags it below 2000. I also enjoyed 1990,1991, 1993 & 1994.
92 is overrated 01 reminds me too much of the horrific Invasion angle 04-14 just blend into one bland mess.....with a highlight here and there.

For me absolutely yes. I always think people sleep on 2002 as a really good year for WWE. I will say though that IMO Summerslam has consistently been really good in recent years. 07 is probably the last bad one I can think of.
