The link mister straightedge123 provided is good and I think there's more info in the FAQ, which you should have consulted first.
To loosen it up I recommend sticking the figure in some boiling water or AF seems to be crazy about using a hair dryer to softening up the plastic.
To answer your question, you should not be "snapping it in half" because that would break the figure. You should carefully separate the torso (which may snap or break a little bit, but usually it can be glued back together).
Basically what you're doing here is "unmaking" the figure. The manufacturer glued it together in a certain way and you're just undoing that. Hope that helps.

and anyway its the only way you can seperate them
also i saw you lower part do you mean remove/swap whole legs or just lower leg/boots

Yeah straightedge, I was thinking the same thing. After I wrote that I was wondering if he ment seperating the knee joints or crotch piece, in which case we both gave him really crappy advice. Haha.
