This time last year Wyatt was fed Bryan & Reigns in CLEAN pinfall situations to prepare him for Cena. They had a chance to make Wyatt THE heel in the company by having him go over Cena @ WM......but we all seen what happened there despite there being AMPLE chances for Cena to get his revenge.
Now they have another chance with Rusev to manufacture a totally credible heel.....that can only be of benefit to them down the road. Will they have him beat Cena cleanly? Nope. But they really should......Cena getting beat at FL and getting his revenge @ WM would be $$$$$$$$$.
If they don't want Cena tied up with the US title but don't want to devalue it by having Cena not challenge for it? Its simple.
Rusev defends his title in a triple threat against Ryback & Wade Barrett. have Cena come down and pull Rusev outta there and they brawl to the back. Ryback distracted by all the goings on turns around and walks into a Bullhammer from Barrett......WB goes for the pin but Ryback gets his foot on the ropes.....WB pulls him back to his feet wallops him with another and becomes THE midcard guy holding both straps.
result?
Cena vs Rusev is freed of the US title & WB is given some momentum and a program for WM with Ryback.

Would be a good way to retire the title.

Rusev wins at fast lane, Cena and America win at Mania, then Cena wins at Extreme Rules.

Before this feud was announced, I always wondered if he'd ever be given the Intercontinental champion to make him a Triple crown champio, so it does seem a bit odd they put him in a US title match. I'm not going to lie, this quite excites me though. I really hope he does win it and add some legitimacy to the belt as opposed to retiring it. I don't even care if they give us the super American winning the countries champion bull crap if it leads to the title given some proper storylines and meaning. I can almost guarantee he'll either lose at Fast Lane or win via DQ, then beat him clean in a non title match at Mania though. That's if he still has the title then. They'll probably have him lose a Triple Threat on Raw so he still has his streak and Cena doesn't get "stuck" with a mid card title. Sorry I'm a little late but he's already a triple crown champ. He's not a grand slam champ yet. He deserves to be, but I don't see him winning the IC title.

I said this on my RAW show, Cena should eventually take it and run with it. Be proud of it. It'll do wonders for the value of the title.

Here's how I'd love for things to go:
Lana helps Russev retain at Fast Lane Cena makes Russev tap to win the title at WM31 Cena loses the title to Sami Zayn the next night on Raw Cena and Russev continue to feud with Russev winning a Last Man Standing match somewhere in there
WWE, I'll be patiently waiting for my paycheck.

They're really trying to make the midcard titles matter this month.

I was always under the impression the US title didn't count, yet the Smackdown tag titles and World Heavyweight championship did after being introduced after the brand split. He'll also never be a grand slam champion as both traditional "tertiary" titles are retired (Hardcore and European).

Ric Flair was a 13 Time World Champion, had a 16 year break (between US Title regins) and then won the US Title again before winning the World Title another 3 times.

Maybe Rusev will go over Cena and become a major star.

It's not unheard of fur former world champs of any company to "drop back down" and win a lower title. It gives them something to do while the main ever scene moves on to stay fresh.

I don't think WWE would take the title of Grand Slam champion away because of the US title. I don't know. I always thought he was Triple Crown. Also, I figured the US would be the "lower" or "tertiary" title, and the IC, like always, would be the upper mid card title.

Cena defeating Rusev doesn't interest me.
Cena being US Champ interests me less.

It will give Cena that rub he most definitely needs.

Tisk tisk, when will they start building towards the future? Cena won't be around forever, Rusev may be out dated but he's over and he's actually got talent..... Guess that explains it then.
Just when I was starting to like him too, nice knowing you bud, good luck on Superstars/NXT.

here is how the Cena/Rusev feud will go down they will do a series of promos with Rusev bring up valid points. And Cena cracking jokes then the matches will come with Cena steamrolling Rusev. then WWE will be forced to call someone like Chris Jericho. back to repair the damage. see Bray Wyatt and countless other superstars.
