Mid Day
Grady and I are finishing helping his mother move the last of her property into her new home. I'm always willing to do what I can for close friends and family, plus I figured this would be fun since I haven't seen his mother in ages.
"Just a little further," I tell Grady.
"I always hated this couch," he says jokingly.
We take a couple of steps until Grady feels like he can't go anymore.
"I need a break," he says as he puts the couch down, struggling to catch his breath.
"What else do we have left after this?" I ask, since I didn't pay attention when we were pulling this out of the moving truck.
"This is the last big item," he tells me, breathing heavily. "I helped her move her bedroom & kitchen stuff the other day."
I don't speak at first, I feel overridden with guilt for not being present to help with the initial move.
"Let's just suck it up, get this in and then we'll take a break," I tell him.
He doesn't respond just gives me an annoyed look.
"C'mon, let's go," I say as I pick up my side of the couch.
"Easy for you superstar," he says sarcastically "not all of us are up hitting the weights at dawn."
He has a point. "Damn! Check her out," I say. But before Grady can investigate I add "she's staring at you bro."
He picks up the couch with ease, trying to impress this girl, and we hurry inside. We put the couch down in place and before I know it, he's out the door looking for the girl who was staring.
"Where was she at?" He asks as he reenters the home.
I don't respond, I just break out into laughter.
"You jackass," he says.
"Got you moving didn't it," I say, still laughing.
We both sit on the couch we just brought inside and catch our breaths.
"So, how was your workout this morning?" Grady asks, making conversation while we catch our breath.
"Good man. I'm feeling better than ever," I tell him "I hit the weights for a while before I took off on my morning run."
"Oh yeah, what does Scott say?" He asks me.
"Nothing, he didn't make it today," I tell him.
"That's unusual for him isn't it?" He asks with concern on his face.
"Yeah, it is," I agree. "I just figured something came up."
"Where do you think he was?" he asks.
"Don't know, but I'm sure he has a good reason for not making it." I shrug my shoulders as I talk. "Maybe getting film on my opponents or something."
"Who are you facing next?" Grady wonders.
"At Big Trouble In Little Seattle? Diamond Jack Sabbath & Axle Aomorie," I tell him.
"Who the hell are they?" He asks. He's not being rude, it's just the way the guy is wired.
"Two newcomers. I don't know much about them," I say.
"Axle Aomorie?" His voice trails off.
"Yeah, something about him, he just seems like a prick to me." I respond
"And the other one?" He asks "Outback Jack or something like that."
"Diamond Jack," I answer laughing "I know they call him the Innovator of Anarchy, he's the type of person that when he talks, everybody listens."
"That's all you know about them?" He asks surprised.
"Pretty much," I respond.
"Well, that's pretty bleak," he adds, like if I didn't know.
"Alright man," I stand up "let's finish up."
Grady gets up slowly, I can tell he doesn't want our short break to be over. We head back to the moving truck to get the last of he boxes.
"Damn mom! This box is heavy," Grady shouts.
"Well books aren't exactly light son," She responds with an innocent giggle.
"Ugh," I grunt as I pick up the next bock. Grady was right. They were both right, books aren't exactly light.
"Hey mom, you should order us a pizza," Grady yells out as he looks at me with a mischievous smile on his face.
"We're working up an appetite here," He says with a laugh.
"Oh, hush," she replies, "I cooked don't worry."
"Damn," he says silently. He looks up at me "I really wanted pizza."
I just shake my head and laugh at how much he reminds me of a child when he's around his mother. We both rush into the kitchen having just worked up an appetite.
TV on in the background, "1 person is in critical condition after a head on collision this afternoon..."
"What are we having?" I wonder out loud.
"Roast beef." Grady's mom responds.
"You're going to love it," Grady says overjoyed, "my mom's roast beef is legendary."
"Well, I don't know about legendary," Grady's mom says as her cheeks blush red.
"So how is everything going dear? It's been so long since I've seen you." Grady's mom asks with a smile.
"Not much, ma'am, just training." I respond with little enthusiasm.
"Oh, well in case I haven't told you, we are all really proud of you." She says sincerely.
"Yeah, son. I can't tell you how proud I am of you." Grady adds sarcastically.
I stare at him intently for a second before I respond, "Thank you ma'am, I'm sorry I haven't come around in a while, but I promise that is going to change."
"There's no need for apologies, you're here now and you're always welcome here. Remember that," she winks as she responds.
Back At The Apartment
"Awe man, I feel so bloated." Grady says as he peels off his coat, entering our apartment.
"You're mom makes the best roast beef." I tell him as I enter our apartment, putting my keys down on the counter.
"Yeah, she does." Grady agrees, as he opens up a bottle of beer.
My phone starts ringing as he finishes his sentence.
"Who is it?" Grady asks looking at my phone.
"It's Scott, I wonder what he wants." I say as I have a seat.
"Hey Scott, what's up?" I answer the phone curiously.
"Did you hear about Sean?" He asks.
"No, what?" I wonder.
"He was in a head on collision this morning, he's in ICU."
