In 2005 we saw the rise of both Cena and Batista to the top of the WWE. While Cena moved to Raw early in the year with the WWE Title and received some of the worst backlash any performer has seen in this industry, Batista was having a very underrated year on Smackdown both on the mic and in the ring. Both are very polarizing figures (then and today), but in 2005 they were both considered "THE MAN" in the WWE.
Who did you guys prefer in 2005?
From the moment Batista gave HHH the thumbs down I was instantly sold on the guy. I had been a fan while he was in Evolution but the slow burn for months with HHH showed he had learned ALOT from HHH and Flair in the art of storytelling and in the ring seemed to jump leaps and bounds from where he was 6 months before WM21. The guy wasn't cheesy like Cena, won a lot but wasn't portrayed as "Superman," and just gave off this bada** vibe that made fans want to be on his side. In the ring his first 2 PPV matches with HHH are underrated while there HIAC match is one of the best ever. His street fight with JBL at SummerSlam was a brutal beat down, and his match with Eddie at No Mercy is a lost forgotten little gem that shows off Batista's great selling.
Even before 2005 I was starting to turn off of Cena. I loved him around WM20 when he was feuding with Show because he hadn't been given the cheesy "Superman" gimmick yet and was actually portrayed as an underdog. Sadly, but TGAB a few months later he was already being portrayed as unbeatable in the midcard and guys like Booker T, RVD, Rene Dupree, and Carlito suffered from it. It was basically his booking from 2005 but in the midcard.
Come 2005 I enjoyed the Cena/JBL story but there WM21 match is brutally bad. He then went on to have a great I Quit match with JBL 2 months later but put on a dud with Jericho at SummerSlam. The next night on Raw him and Jericho made up for it but Cena followed that up with average matches with Angle (which says a lot considering he was in the ring with Kurt friggin Angle).
I'm not the Cena hater a lot of others are but the guy was very inconsistent in 2005 while Batista had an overall great year. While I've always been a big Batista fan I don't think I'm biased in saying he blew Cena away in 2005. Its just sad that he got injured when he did.
