I have always wondered if that was the intended finish or if there was a screw up and that's why Austin got it back the next night.

Kane's first WWF Championship reign was intentional. This was used as a vehicle to build heat for the on-going Austin/McMahon saga and begin the whole Kane & Undertaker are in cahoots storyline.

I think you mean 1998 win too. For his WWE Title win happened at King of the Ring 98. He debuted in October of 1997.
But it was intentional, for no way was Kane going to light himself on fire, so he kind of had to win the WWE Title.

definitely intentional. and it didn't make anyone look bad:
Austin - lost because of interference, and a near impossible stipulation to overcome (first blood)considering his opponent had 92% of his body covered. Austin didn't look weak at all.
Undertaker - got him serious heat for costing austin the title, as well as continuing the slow build towards a feud with Austin, and, as BrIaNMeRcY said, added the subplot storyline of whehter or not Taker and Kane were in cahoots, behind everyone's back.
Kane - even though it was a one day reign,it solidified his standing in the main event tier (after losing his feud with Taker) ,and very few people can say they actually beat Austin for the World Title.

Well Kane couldn't have got busted open due to none of his flesh showing so it was impossible for Austin to win. However he should've had altleast 1 month with the title instead of 1 day. |

I remember being disappointed it ended so soon. But I've always said Kane was misused from the get go.

I was extremely disappointed he didn't have a longer run and that was the beginning of his downfall in my opinion.

I was fuming when Austin lost it the way he did.......and delirious with excitement when he whooped the ass of this red bastardo the next night!!
I too think it should have lasted until Fully Loaded though.....although that may have taken the steam outta Vinces stride in his constant efforts to strip Austin.
Jesus I loved 1998.

The 'Taker/Kane working together storyline was excellent. Now THAT was some damn good writing, until they ballsed it up by turning 'Taker heel and reuniting him with Bearer and turning Kane face. That was just stupid.

I wish he would have kept it till the Survivor Series, or maybe the month before and lost it to Mankind just for Mankind to lose to The Rock.
Kane really should have had more title wins. The fact he never had one till 2010 really just sucks. He looked great with the Big Gold.

Just got to the episode of Raw where he lost it back to SCSA, and it is a shame. Austin was white hot by that point, but Kane was easily just as over at that point. I understand why they threw Taker in there as well, but I think an actual Austin/Kane feud would have been amazing at this time..
