for those who don't know, let's travel back to late summer/early fall of 2002. Triple H was the newly minted , newly created WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and his first major feud was to be with Kane. but rather than just do a straight up feud to try and start a legacy for this new WHC, they did a storyline. one that became infamous. Triple H claimed he knew Kane's "secret". and that secret was "Katie Vick"
they immediately disregarded all previous storylines and angles involving Kane - apparently he was no longer burned in a fire at the funeral home during which his parents died. he also apparently wasn't believed dead for years, as had been portrayed in his debut angle with the Undertaker. no, in revisionist history, Kane not only was known to be alive for some of those years, and no longer burned, but he also went to school. and he also had a girlfriend, a cheerleader girlfriend. a girlfriend named Katie Vick. and the story went that one night they had gone out together, and had a little too much to drink. in spite of this, being the Big Red Machine, Kane got behind the wheel and ended up getting in an accident. one that caused the death of his beloved Katie. and this was the "secret" he carried all these years...
this, in and of itself, was messed up. by fundamentally changing the character nd his origin, a lot of people were mad. he went from a burned, reclusive, vengeance-filled monster to a heartbroken man who only wore a mask because he was "scarred on the inside".
THEN, it got even worse. in what has long been considered one of the worst segments ever, Triple H "discovered" some long lost video of Kane visiting his girlfriend at the funeral parlor for her wake. THIS segment fired up and pissed off ALL kinds of parents and censorship type groups, as not only did it portray the dead in a demeaning matter, it also simulated necrophilia, and was generally done in bad taste. there was such a HUGE public backlash to this whole thing, that the angle quickly wrapped up and was pushed aside as Kane and Trips quickly had a match to resolve the feud, and Triple H moved on to a renewed feud with HBK.
so,I ask, WTF Vince?! did he REALLY think people would be down with Necrophilia and abuse of a corpse? actually, nevermind - this is the same guy who wanted to do an incest angle with his daughter. but even beyond that part of it, they radically changed the Kane character and his already established beginnings. which I think pissed me off even more than the sex in a coffin stunt, which I took for the stupid angle it simply was.

I sat there just asking myself, "WTF am I watching?" But when the segment ended & they cut to HHH, his reaction was priceless. He's using Coach to keep himself from falling to the ground from laughter. I don't know why, but that has always cracked me up

I know most didn't, however.

HHH had live sex with a corpse and then threw her brains on the camera lens...
That actually happened.

Completely craps on Kane's credibility and badassery. It's one of those memories you gotta laugh at now, but deep down you know it was just embarrassing.
WWE 2K15 subtly references this in the commentary of the HHH/HBK Showcase.

The worst part was unifying the IC and WHC titles, I will never understand the reasoning for that, but yeah this was pretty messed up looking back but man did I laugh as a young lad watching it.

I always wondered who was more to blame for this (or if there is a percentage split) between Vince or Hunter. I could see either or both thinking this was edgy and provocative. The humor seems to skew more to HHH's style of segments but the total lack of forethought reeks of Vince.

It was wrong on SO many levels. Even worse than Dawn Marie killing Al Wilson by s******g him to death.

Don't forget, not only did Kane's whole past history get changed around with this story line, Triple H also had the privilege of beating Kane at No Mercy to win the Intercontinental Title in a "Title vs. Title match" in their blow off feud match.
So Triple H got to destroy Kane's gimmick, win his IC Title while being World Champion - and retire the IC Title at that - and rule the roster for well over a year.
No wonder he was so hated back then.

As the story goes, it was supposed to be RVD as the first World Champion on Raw. But Stephanie supposedly cried to her dad as the story is, and said that Hunter deserved it. So that's why at Unforgiven 2002, Triple H beat RVD when Flair double crossed RVD for Triple H to retain the World Title. RVD was gonna be the first to put all the belts together, but Triple H stopped that, and he put the IC Title with the World Title. After that botching for a few months, they had to bring back the IC Title for the mid card guys to shoot for something.

If you remember too, Kane was IC and World Tag Champion with The Hurricane, and just got done beating 6 guys in the TLC match to retain the Tag Titles. Then I believe a week before the No Mercy PPV, Jericho and Christian win the Tag Titles, and killed any momentum Kane had going into No Mercy. Then Kane laid down and dropped the IC Title to Triple H - who didn't even pick it up and celebrate - he just walked away with the World Title. Kane didn't even have to bring the IC Title down to the ring with him but he did anyhow. Crazy how when Stephanie got into power of booking matches that things started to make a lot less sense.

This ends up going back to the debate of whether Triple H genuinely loves Stephanie or not. I believe that he does...now. When he first started chasing her all those years ago, I'm certain it was to get himself a major push.

I remember reading that during a conference call with investors Vince said the angle was no worse than HBOs show Six Feet Under...except the only resemblance to the show was that it had corpses. It was about a family that owned a funeral parlor. Nobody had sex with a corpse. No brian throwing. I seriously have no clue what Vince was thinking.
It was like this whole feud was designed to throw kayfabe out the window. Kane's backstory was completely canned for this crap. I'd love to know Glen's feelings on this angle. Considering Taker has been so protective of his character all these years I'm surprised Glen would go for this. And it's not like he was a newbie either. He was a respected veteran.

I honestly think that bothered me more than the the corpse segment, and really pissed me off - the wholesale changes to Kane's character.
