Animals are not cheap. Actually, they are cheap until they swallow something they shouldn't. I am curious if anyone has any pet health insurance plans, especially those with cats.
This is the third time I've been to the vet over my cats getting into something. This time it was my girlfriend's lace shirt, on Tuesday he pulled one of the strings from the shirt and tried swallowing it. It got lodged inside of his throat to the point where he was vomiting while the string was still stuck. It was about a 1 1/2 ft string. He ran from me when I would try to get a closer look (they say do not pull if something is stuck). When I found him in the basement I couldn't find the string! I took him to the vet and they said if he swallowed it, he will start showing signs of illness/vomiting within 2-3 days. He started getting sick last night, and plan to take him back to the vet about 30 minutes after I post this.
Does anyone have any health insurance plans for their cat or pets? I realize most of it probably just covers medicines, but even that would be helpful advice as I'm sure he will need something if he has surgery to remove the string.

Sounds like your cats are some hungry dudes. I put back $15 a week for cat expenses. I've never had an emergency situation, but $780 is more than enough to cover yearly checkup, food, litter, and toys for a year with money to spare in case of an emergency.

I don't know of any plans, but putting some money away for cat expenses sounds like a wise move. I have two and I'm going to start doing this.

$15 a week barely covers wet food for my two cats! To give an update, he is in for surgery this morning. The Vet said she found a concerning spot in his intestines.. Meaning the string had likely coiled and might eventually cause a serious blockage. Don't wait to see how these things play out if it happens to you, it will only worsen the situation both financially and for your pet. I'll be able to pick up my 14 lb booger tomorrow morning if all goes well. *fingers crossed*

I use PetPlan for my chocolate lab, it is 300 a year, but with an active pet it can be well worth it.

He's been on Purina indoor cat food and is actually healthier than he's ever been. More active, less weight, same appetite.

We got him back today! Here is the $1200 lace that he swallowed. I think the vet said they opened him up in the intestine and had to cut it in half so they could pull it out in both directions. I've included a cotton swab with the lace so scale is easier to see. It was at least 2 feet long. She said if the lace was thinner it could have passed through him but in this case it was too thick. He's recovering as we speak!
