I like Kofi Kingston. He's very talented and enjoyable to watch. I even met him once and the guy is just so nice. He's not my favorite wrestler ever, but I do like him.
However, in terms of character development and career progression, I can't believe how little he's advanced since debuting.
Kofi has been on the main event roster since early 2008. That's seven years. I did the math. And besides a boatload of mostly forgettable Intercontinental title reigns he hasn't really ever mattered. His recent run with the New Day is more of a step sideways as opposed to a true step forward. Now he's simply sharing that mid-card spotlight with two other people.
Most of us have watched him his whole career, but you need to step back and think just how long seven years in that company really is. That's as long as both Austin and Angle lasted. Look at Shawn Michaels in 1989 and what he became by 1996. Bret in 1985 compared to 1992. Edge in 1998 compared to 2005. HHH in 1995 compared to 2002. I could go on forever. And I'm not trying to knock him because just surviving that long in the WWE is a feat. It's just shocking how he's lasted this long without really progressing at all.
Is he dead weight or just a "solid hand" to have around? Is it too late for him? When you're booked a certain way for so long it's hard for the audience to think of you as anything else. I wonder if they still look at him as a possible star or just acrobatic filler.
Again, I think Kofi is a cool dude. I'm just disappointed by how little they've done to make him a true superstar. The "give it time" excuse no longer applies to him.

He's like the modern equivalent of Tito Santana.

I think he's fine where he is.I mean there's no way in hell hes gonna win the big one but it's not like he can't still have a good career in the WWE.Some people are just not cut out to become a big time star and he's one of them.Him being with the New Day was the best career move for him because without them I don't think he would've last longer than he has.

I mean, not everybody is gonna be a world champion. That's just a harsh reality. For every one Steve Austin on the roster, there have to be a lot more Billy Gunns and Kanes around holding things together.
His feud with Orton more or less showed us what his ceiling is. Very good in the ring, but just not inherently charismatic enough to carry an angle by himself. As for "character development," does WWE even do that anymore? Pretty sure they just give guys nicknames and no motivation. Kofi doesn't really have a story, but who does?

"STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!" This is what I thought. He seemed to be inline for a nice push when he won a few matches against Orton, but that incident on raw pushed him back down the ladder. I dont see the problem with being a mid-carder tbh, there's a few greats in the hall of fame that never won the big one, and more to the point, didn't need the big one. Lets look at this from a different prospective, John Cena is a multiple time world champion, without that he doesn't have much to go on. Roddy Piper never won the world title, but is still a huge name amongst pro-wrestling fans. I get that everyone wants to be at the top bit it isn't gonna happen so easily now there's only one world title, I could see Kofi with the big gold whc, but not as the sole world champion of WWE. This new day thing though is good for Kofi, its really exploiting how versatile he can be playing the heel. Edit: anyone know why they switched Kofi's nationality, without causing offense every white person thinks Jamaicans are cool, the colours are marketable alone, the cool accent, then all of a sudden he's from Ghana.. What? That's not cool... Again not to cause offense. WWE Jamaican-me-crazy so im Ghana go watch some old Kofi matches

Kofi's been my favorite since the day he debuted. He will always be my favorite wrestler. He doesn't deserve the crap he gets sometimes. He deserves a wwe championship run. He is so talented and they can't see it for some freaking reason.

He's been my favorite since HBK retired. There was a time when Kofi was the most athletic guy in WWE, and he's still one of the top workers. His career just hasn't been the same since that debacle with the slow-talking, slow-working, ever-whining Randy Orton. I'm just glad Kofi still has a roster spot now.

I'm a big fan of Kofi, but I wouldn't say he necessarily has the skills to go higher. That said, he's one of the biggest victims (alongside Ryback, Sheamus and Barrett) of the start-stop pushes that WWE does. Had they gone all the way with him in 2009, who knows what would have happened.

He's another Swagger, Ziggler, anybody.
Seemed to be headed for a big push in 2010.
Push died.
They paid for it.

I LOVE me Kofi Kingston. He's been one of my favorite since his debut. I'm glad he turned heel with New Day because I do think his character needed rejuvenated. And I am currently loving his heel run. Not sure he'll ever be WWE champion, but that's okay. Some of my favorites of all time have never been WWE champion. Edit: anyone know why they switched Kofi's nationality, without causing offense every white person thinks Jamaicans are cool, the colours are marketable alone, the cool accent, then all of a sudden he's from Ghana.. What? That's not cool... Again not to cause offense. WWE Jamaican-me-crazy so im Ghana go watch some old Kofi matches Kofi's mother begged him to change it. I guess the people in her town didn't understand why he pretended to be from somewhere else. So they dropped it in comical fashion and moved on.

Kofi is talented, he's just not that good of an actor or very charismatic. However, he's doing a good job at the New Day angle because those characters are supposed to be over the top and over act, so it works. I don't think he'll ever be a main eventer or a World Champion, but he's a solid and dependable talent.

Kofi is a great hand, he's just not really main event material, especially with the talent coming up and coming in.
That's fine, though, not everyone needs to be in the main event to have a successful career. He's basically always had a spot, and now he's doing some of the most entertaining work of his career. Nothing wrong with that.
With that being said, I would've given him the MITB briefcase this year, just to garner even more heat for New Day. I wouldn't have him win the title, but they could've done some great stuff with that briefcase.

The wwe will never let him go any higher my guess why is because he is small and black.

He's like the modern equivalent of Tito Santana. I agree with this. He is a reliable midcarder and that's all he will ever be, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I think this stuff with the New Day is the best he's ever done. I honestly think the quality of his ring work has gone down a bit, but it's really cool to see him wrestling as a heel and being recognized as a veteran.

Kofi Kingston is great. I can honestly say he's been one of my favorites since he came to Raw from ECW. He's very entertaining in the ring. I've heard some down his mic skills, but I honestly don't think he's that bad. Now I'm not saying he's a great mic guy, the likes of Jericho, Rock, Punk, Piper, etc. But he's not horrible.
Kofi has had numerous Intercontinental and US title reigns, and is a multiple time tag team champion. But the problem is every time he wins one of those titles, creative seems to lose interest in him and they don't do anything with him. As others have mentioned, he's a unfortunate victim of the start stop push. I hate when someone like Kofi, Ziggler, or Swagger are done this way. All three are very talented, and there's time when creative is doing nothing with them.
But I have to say that The New Day is a breath of fresh air for Kofi. I just hope that they remain a big part of the show and aren't forgotten about by creative.
