The main similiarity is the horrendous crowd, though the ECW ones were the originals and the NXT fans (like all "cult" wrestling crowds since) are trying to be them. ECW made terrible wrestlers into small-time stars. NXT makes good wrestlers into guys ready for the big time. Look at Mojo Rawley, for example. He sucks, and in NXT, everybody knows it. In ECW, Heyman would have hidden Mojo's limitations and presented him in a way that worked and got over.
On the whole, NXT's TV product is a lot better than ECW's was.

No. Ecw you didn't know who was going to leave for the big leagues. While on NXT you can tell well I can. Also more tables...and chairs...and New Jack.

Nah.
ECW was something COMPLETELY different and unique at the time. NXT feels like a larger, well produced, WWE sponsored independent organization...and I love it.
To me, NXT feels more like WWF 1997. Not in terms of storylines or anything but it's a great product that many people are just now discovering and viewership is growing to the point where it will be an even bigger thing in the upcoming years.
WWF had a tremendous product in 1997 but the viewership and ratings didn't come until 1998-1999. I feel NXT is similar as the product for the past year has been excellent but people are still just discovering it for the first time.

Come on, man. ECW flew in the face of what wrestling was - it took traditional NWA style wrestling and pointed out how old fashioned it was, and contemporary WWF and pointed out how infantile it was - and then gave a small minority of people what they felt other wrestling organisations were missing. It introduced Lucha Libre to WCW, who then introduced it to the rest of the world. It introduced hardcore to WWF, who then watered it down from strangling people with barbed wire and ing crucifying people to things like Al Snow vs Head. It introduced the soap opera/Jerry Springer style to story lines (things like the lesbian storyline, Sandman/Raven/Sandman's Son etc) and first suggested that size wasn't everything (see: the entire ECW roster except for 911 and Big Guido) and that shoot-style MMA-type gimmicks were the future (see: Taz, now done much better with Lesnar). NXT (as much as I adore it), is only revolutionising things OFF camera and is extremely introspective. Quite honestly, I don't see how the two are alike in any way.

I really wish that they would air NXT live on Saturday nights. I miss that element of pro wrestling on Saturday nights.... WCW Saturday Night or SNME.... NXT would fit perfectly into my life then! Since I have a nine month old. I even remember staying at my buddies house and we would watch ECW late night on saturday nights back in the late 90s

Yes! NXT actually replaced ECW on TV in 2010. Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett competed in season 1. NXT gives us the Chris Jericho Guerreros Mysterios Malenkos and also guys like Awesome Bam Bam Bigelow
Sami Zayn Neville Somoa Joe Owens and these guys are capable of working ECW Style matches. So yes.

NXT to me right now feels a bit like TNA in 05-06.

In a way, yes. In many other ways, no.
On the 'yes' side, I do feel like, at least backstage, there seems to be a bit of a "we're all in this together" mentality which, to me, was in many ways one of ECW's most living pulses. I don't feel like a superstar ego the likes of Shawn Michaels would go very far backstage in NXT, and it's my understanding the same could be said for ECW at a time.
ECW, however, thrived a lot on being the "other" promotion that would give a shake to talent that maybe WCW or WWF wouldn't, which, as a springboard promotion, I don't know that NXT has. Sure the talent is newer, more raw, and has more at stake which shows through the work that they do, but it's sort of ground level for the big times, as it still carries that association with the WWE branding.
Definitely some comparisons to be drawn, though.

I think NXT just feels like NXT, and should be allowed to be its own thing without people constantly trying to draw comparisons between it and something else.

Joey Styles said it best- "NXT is like ECW without the blood and guts".
