Never understood that move either. Man, I loved Bischoff as GM though.

True it probably would have been better to have him appear first on the stage, however I was honestly still in shock that I saw Eric Bischoff on WWE TV that I still didn't believe it until he came out on stage.

Yeah, I didn't like that.
But damn, I loved Bischoff as GM.

I liked it and it was done at the right moment. Right before a commercial break. Anyone who was watching Raw was gonna keep it on that channel no matter what to see if Eric Bischoff was actually gonna come out on stage as the new General Manager for Monday Night Raw.
The hug with Vince was so weird though. Like I think both men wanted to have knives in their hands and stab each other in the back repeatedly over and over. But Vince was kind of cool to look above all the crap Bischoff pulled during the Monday Night War and hire Eric to be a part of the WWE then.

I think they do that sometimes so people have a chance to call their buddies and say "hey if ou aren't watching, you better turn it on now!"

Yep. Ratings boost.
Side note that segment was absolutely great. Booker was very entertaining.

WWE in 2002 was in freefall. Vince and the queen of the brain-trust couldn't understand why their ratings/buyrates were slipping and slipping. Cue Vince hotshotting nWo, Bischoff, Steiner etc etc.
I always felt that had the Invasion storyline been ran right? its conclusion should have been at WM18.....as Vince celebrates the next night on Raw the nWo come out to beat the crapoutta him and Easy E sprays nWo on his back.
But since the Alliance(ugh) were eviscerated by August that was never gonna happen.

Stupid move. They had the chance to do something amazing here, and they ruined it.
Man, Bischoff was the best GM ever though.

It wasn't enough to win, they had to dull their knives at the same time too...

Steph changes structure of creative with Vince's blessing because they can clearly do no wrong Vince and Steph lose their marbles in ego fuelled madness and wipe the WCW stars off the map in a war where they won both sides..... Cue Creative decline and hotshotting of several angles to get back buyrates.

The fact the dirtsheets knew nothing about this, makes this moment astonishing in its own right. Hell really did freeze over when Vince McMahon hugged Eric Bischoff.

Lol "Hotshotting" just makes me think of Cornette's rants about ECW and how they were "blowing their load" before it was time (sorry to be so crude). And thus creating fans who were impatient, expecting MORE, and the wrestlers having to top their last efforts. Definitely contributed to the popularity waning over the years to how it is now.
I've been thinking hard, and listening to JR and Cornette, Austin... and they really need to go back to basics. Submissions to seem more dangerous and unbreakable, finishers not being kicked out of several times a match... Unless it's a high stakes match at a pay per view, or Wrestlemania in general, these things should apply.
Back on topic, I hated Bischoff at the time, but like many things I hated back then (Lesnar, Jarrett, Raven...) I appreciated them immensely now. They played their roles so well. Bischoff was an awesome GM. Unparalleled.

I always thought Vince could have been worried about the pop Eric would get if it was a complete surprise so by doing this he let everyone and took the edge off the pop? Just a theory based on the whole ego thing we have, and always will see.
Eric OWNED that GM role for me. Loved every second of him on WWE tv.

WCW that's why plus Vince couldn't have him getting a huge pop with vince standing next to him so they spoiled it early

I kept thinking of this when you mentioned weird hugs.. I could imagine that was the kind of awkward expression on Vince's face when he was squeezing Eric tight & whisper in his ear: "In a fist fight, I knew I could of taken you.."
Easy E was always my favourite GM, he always made episodes of Raw entertaining & he did such a good job at playing a jerk on tv you just wanted to wipe that stupid smirk off his face every week. He was slick & smooth talking, always liked Bischoff.. Booker T in 2002 was killing it, him & Eddie Guerrero was always featured in the most stupidest stuff back in the day, I know they also had Goldust & Regal who played their characters extremely well but after them it was always Booker & Eddie who would be put in these random laughable situations, 2002 had a bunch of them..

I loved Eric Bischoff as GM. He really knew the character he needed to play and he did so to perfection.

I never understood why they showed him beforehand. But I loved the segment and really enjoyed Bischoff as GM.
Wish they would have had a couple month story line about Eric trying to steal the company out from under the McMahons. Think it would have made for great TV and would have been a better way to write Eric off TV than just throwing him in a dumpster.
