Read in a recent story Jake Roberts talking about Roddy struggling with drug addiction like himself for many years. Said Roddy was an addict. Roddy also said in an interview with HBO Arman Keteyian that he "for 20 years" lived the way of cocaine, booze, painkillers etc.
I was not aware that he suffered from any type of substance addiction other than the occasional drinking with the boys like most of the guys did back in those days. Does anyone else know anything more on this?

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by more, but yes, he was into all three of those at one time or another. Lots of functioning addicts in the business back in the day. A majority of the guys popped pain killers like candy and when those are mixed with booze, it's a destructive cocktail. Mix in cocaine with that and it really turned a lot of guys into ticking time bombs. Now, throw steroids in with that - that's a helluva workload on the heart.
We're talking about a guy that, as Jesse Ventura said last week, once worked 91 days in a row without a day off (and probably plenty similar runs of days). Taking the physical abuse in the ring every day, driving from town to town, etc. Tough lifestyle, especially for the amount of years he was active within it.
Roddy has been clean of coke and such for quite some time to my knowledge, but still enjoyed some drinks every now and then.
I just saw last night's Raw tribute clip and that pic of Roddy with "In Memory" on the screen...still very surreal.

90% of the roster in the 80s was using cocaine, steroids and painkillers to excessive amounts. hence why so many of them are dead.

It's just so harrowing to hear him say "I'll never make 65 so I don't have to worry about my pension". It's like he knew

Piper is one of the more obvious drug users in my opinion. He was off his rocker most of the time. Still, an absolute legend. RIP Hot Rod.

When you think about it, these guys must have really severe heart attacks because they never, ever get resuscitated. Plenty of people have Heart Attacks and survive that are older than most of these wrestlers. My Grandfather survived one and he was in his 70s at the time. Jerry Lawler is literally the only exception and that's because he happened to be surrounded by doctors at the time and even then he barely made it.

Speaking of the Piper tribute on RAW did anyone else think it was a plaid skirt hanging on back of the director's chair and not an actual kilt? It was very short so I thought maybe they shouldn't have panned to the bottom of it if they could have gotten ahold of a real kilt.

Piper was one of the obvious ones, even right up to his death listening to his podcast you could hear by the tone of his voice he always sounded a bit drunk or something. Back in the day, you just had to listen to him on Pipers Pit and know the guy was off his head on cocaine...that energy!!
R.I.P Hot Rod.

I think Flair mentioned it in his book. When he (Flair) went to wrestle Jack Veneno (or Victor Jovica) in the Dominican Republic, Flair took Piper with him (for protection & to have someone to hang out with). He said Piper was given a spittoon full of cocaine, plus they paid his airfare.

In recent months on piper's pit podcast he's sounded completely out of his mind, borderline insane (like his brain wasn't getting enough oxygen or he had CTE of some type), out of breath, and overall very winded. I noticed that before any of this happened.

But with how quickly they had to get it all together, I'm sure they were in a pinch. It's not like they sell kilts at Walmart.

Roddy Piper even mentioned at his HOF speech in 2005 that he did cocaine.
"And I have done some real serious vitamins" is what he said when referring to Hogan telling the kids to take vitamins.
Bret Hart talks about it in his book too, how Roddy, Sheik, Muraco, Adonis, Orton and Anvil all would enjoy the white powder on a daily basis. That was the original Kliq of the WWF in the early 80s.

Cocaine to get up, booze and pain pills to come down. The vicious cycle of why our childhood heroes keep ing dying. It does beg the question, is it better to live a shorter life as a rockstar than it is to live a longer mundane life? I guess it depends on what is important to you. It doesn't make it any less sad for their families or fans. Piper isn't a guy I feel thinks he got gypped out of anything in life but I have to imagine there are some things in his children's lives he would have liked to be around for still. I guess you can't really have it both ways. Regardless, I think the wrestling business has changed for the better in that regard. Hopefully the kids of today never really have to experience a lot of what we've gone through over the past 15 or so years with losing these guys.

Its like the question directed to Olympic athletes "Would you do steroids/banned substances to win in X competition if you knew you would die by 30 or within the next 10 years (something like that)?" 90% of the people surveyed or some high figure close to that said yes. I think to most of those guys, they saw things that we would never see. Parties back then, the camaraderie was far different. However, we see things on a daily basis that they do not see. Family. Although I think that a lot of guys say that they wish they could have spent more time with their family (and I am sure they do and do not blame them), I do not think they would trade their time on the road for anything.

Piper was not healthy.
This is going to sound wrong but...anytime one of these guys from the 80s and even 90s dies I'm really not that surprised.
They have out their bodies through hell in various ways. Drugs, steroids, bumps in the ring, etc.
So many of these guys are athletes in top physical condition and die young. It's a shame.
Eddie Guerrero and Curt Hennig hurt the most. They should both still be here.

unfortunately, drugs, alcohol, steroids, and willing women defined the 80's for these guys. and over the past 15 years or so it's come back to haunt them , big time.
