In 2001, Dreamworks Pictures released an animated film called Shrek. It followed an unlovable ogre, who’s peaceful swamp is disturbed by a bunch of fairy tale creatures when they’re forced out of their homes by the evil Lord Farquaad, who conspires to use Shrek to save a princess and become a king. The film was a critical and commercial hit, featuring a voice cast consisting of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as his motor-mouthed companion Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad. With development beginning in 1995, the film was a long time coming and a vindicating success. It was also nearly very different.
You see, Mike Myers was a replacement for the original actor who would bring the ogre to life. That actor was none other than Chris Farley, who in the late 90′s had recorded as much as 80-90% of his required dialogue before his death from a drug overdose in December of 1997. Since Farley’s performance couldn’t be completed, Dreamworks and the filmmakers ultimately decided to recast the role. Now, due to new interest in Farley and his career generated by the upcoming documentary I Am Chris Farley, some of the actor’s initial voice work from the film has resurfaced online.
While the sample has actually been online for the last couple of years (as pointed out by Nerdist), the impending airing of the documentary has seemingly spread the footage to a wider audience taking a more active interest in Farley and his work. Farley, clearly, would’ve made the final product of Shrek a very different film, since he seems to be using his own, unaltered speaking voice to give the character life. It’s a far different kind of Shrek than what we’re so accustomed to with Mike Myers and his Scottish accent, and gives the character a bit more perspective as a someone fallen on a burden that he must carry as opposed to a comically ornery ogre that seems more comedically playful. Farley’s Shrek sounds — as weird as it is to describe it this way — grounded.

I already knew about this but never got to hear the recordings before. Farley's voice fits the character way more too. Too bad  . |

I knew about Farley being the original voice for Shrek, but it's another thing to actually hear what he recorded. Listening to it, just makes me miss the big guy. He's always one of three big guy comedians, the other two being Belushi and Candy, that I always wonder what more we couldn't have gotten if they had not died before their time.

Dang. Farley is so much better than Myers. Can't wait to see the doc. Already have it set to record. I agree. Chris Farley's career would have made a massive turn had he been alive to complete his voice work for Shrek. I would say, Farley as Shrek would have allowed him to branch out to other forms of entertainment. I knew about Farley being the original voice for Shrek, but it's another thing to actually hear what he recorded. Listening to it, just makes me miss the big guy. He's always one of three big guy comedians, the other two being Belushi and Candy, that I always wonder what more we couldn't have gotten if they had not died before their time. All three comedians you listed were awesome at what they did. John Belushi in Ghostbusters would have been a much different film. Same deal with Chris Farley as Shrek. As for John Candy, hard to believe he passed away over twenty years ago. |

As I said before, Farley as Shrek and Belushi as Venkman would have made those those films vastly different. While John Candy was 42 when he died, I feel his career was just about to peak. The one correlation Belushi, Candy, and Farley all have is they died before their career peaked. |

Yeah, really, when you look at the Grown Ups main cast, when it comes to Kevin James, it's a case, of one of these things is not like the others. And not in a bad way against James, because he's funny, and has great chemistry with the guys, but because the rest were the SNL crew. There's no question Farley would have been in that role. And it's sad to think his last role was in Dirty Work. I like the movie, it's not great, but I find it funny, but it's a lower tier movie, and Farley has a small role in it. Plus with his character doing drugs when he's first shown, it's a bit sad, knowing that's the demon that would take Farley. The other sad thing to think is, especially after he died, a lot of his friends talked about how, lots of times, he had that mentality that people weren't laughing with him, they were laughing at him. Making fun of him basically. And the thing that breaks my heart about Farley, are his final words. That weekend he died, he had been with a prostitute, for the drug binge, that would kill him, and when she was going to leave, he basically begged her not to go. It's just shows, he feared being alone, having no one there for him. And so heartbreaking his final moments were with, basically a total stranger. If he really didn't understand how many people really loved him, than that's just a gigantic tragedy, that will always hang over him. |

drifter Farley was attached to quite a few films at the time of his death. In addition to Shrek, he likely would have been in: Lost & Found, Grown Ups, *Untitled 3rd film with David Spade*, Matt Foley film, Atuk, Fatty Arbuckle. Just speculation on my part, but I think he would have likely had some kind of role in Joe Dirt, too. BrIaNMeRcY I honestly think Candy's career had peaked with Uncle Buck.

I believe he had almost the entire movie voiced over at the time of his death and the redid it after his death.

I've heard about this years ago. But like everyone else, never heard the audio. I loved Farley, but I've always been a Mike Myers fan too. Both made SNL great for many years.
I think Myers did a great job with Shrek.
